6 Migration; Key ideas Task Add in as much information as possible Be ready to discuss your ideas; Why do people migrate? What is migration? Have any of your families migrated? Why? What are the positive impacts of migration? What are the negative impacts? What different types of migration exist?

7 Population Key words Task Match up the following key words with their definitions Key word Definitions Push factor This is something that may cause issues in the migration such as visa, cost, natural features such as mountains Pull factor A factor that leads to a person leaving their place of origin. It is something that is bad about where they live Intervening obstacle Someone who has left their place of origin to improve the amount of money they have got, and thus their SOL Economic migrant Someone who leaves their place of origin as a result of the local or national government Asylum seeker A factor that will attract someone to an area – it is something that will ususally make their lives better by improving their SOL / QOL Political Migrant This is someone who has left their country of origin for fear of persecution as a reuslt of their life style or personal beliefs

Host countries Source countries Social Dominance of men is reinforced specifically in the Persian gulf Cultural identity is lost Segregation occurs Multi cultural identity created More local services (Corner shops) Ethnic retailing BR decreases and density reduces Remittances to improve services offered Higher expectations for those that return thus developing the country More women are left behind Imbalanced population pyramid Returning migrants can be very expensive – might not be that provision in place Economic Costs of educating migrants children Certain industries have over dependence on migrants (Construction) Lots of money sent home is remittances = less in host Pressure on resources Take less desirable jobs Skills at lower cost Qualified migrants make up skills gap Young adult work force is reduced Decline in regions which may be difficult to stop Less investment as there is not the work force More jobs in source country (reduction in unemployment) Remittances sent home = more money Less pressure on services Political Might be discrimination against migrants Calls for controls Leads to fundamentalism Government might need to introduce policies to encourage BR increase Policies to introduce in migration Problems/ benefits of Migration; Task You are going to work as a pair to come up with as many answers for the following catagories Time; 5 minutes Host countries Source countries Social Economic Political
