THE ESSAY WRITING PROCESS A. Introduction B. Body C. Conclusion

Why do we write essays?  Essays are generally long pieces of writing written from an author’s personal point of view, but the definition is vague, overlapping with those of an article, a pamphlet and a short story.  We write essays for:  College applications  Research  Standardized tests (STAAR)  To inform others of our findings and point

What do we write about? LOVE WHY? PURPOSE? WHAT?WHO? HOW? SIGNIFICANCE?

PROMPTS & THESIS  Prompts is the question posed to the writer in an effort to express an idea or concept.  A thesis is a statement in support of your prompt presenting your finds, research, and sometimes opinion.

Introduction  Introduction paragraphs is:  A way of getting your reader involved with your essay.  It should include your thesis statement, a kind of mini-outline for the paper  It tells the reader what the essay is going to be about.  It includes your thesis

TRANSITIONS  Transition words :  help language flow smoothly when sequencing events  Some examples are first, second, third, next, them, finally, last.

BODY  The function of the body is to:  Fully develop and explain your argument outlined in your introduction paragraph.  Each paragraph elaborates on one major point and the development of that point.  You use textual evidence, facts, background knowledge and experiences to make your point.

CONCLUSION  The conclusion is the  Restating of the main idea or argument, but in different words.  You are basically SUMMING IT UP!  A conclusion provides the area of your paper where you are able to persuade your reader that you know what your talking about, you are familiar with it, and summing up all the information you have given in the introduction and body paragraphs.

PROMPTS  Can an utopia society really exist?  Can competition be viewed as good or bad? Explain?  Is self-esteem important for everyone?  Can we imagine our society becoming like the society in Harrison Bergeron? How/Why? Explain.  Do we see events happening in our own society that might cause it to become like the society to that place in 2081? Explain.

Final Prompt Submission Does being equal mean that everyone must be the same?? Think carefully about this question. 1.Write an essay explaining how our society today views equality? Be sure to – clearly state your thesis organize and develop your ideas effectively choose your words carefully edit your writing for grammar, mechanics and spelling
