2 What is Expository Writing?
Expository writing is defined as presenting reasons, explanations, or steps in a process An expository essay should follow a logical sequence and have three different main points Logic and coherence is the main focus of an expository essay

3 How is it different ? Expository writing does not tell a story.
Expository writing does not persuade a reader but only gives facts and reasons. Expository writing can also give the steps of a process.

4 Expository Writing Introduction of an expository should include the main idea and what the essay is about. (Thesis statement) The three main reasons supporting this main idea should also be included in the introduction.

5 Expository writing contd.
Paragraph two should introduce the first reason and give details to support the first reason. Paragraph three should introduce the second reason and give details to support the second reason. Paragraph four should introduce the third reason and give details to support the third reason. The conclusion should summarize all the reasons.

Introduction: A. Grabber B. Explain the grabber- background information. C. Use the prompt to address the topic D. Give your opinion/thesis statement E. Give reasons for your opinion/position F. Clincher II. Body Paragraph 1 (Focus on Reason 1) Sentence 1: Identify your reason for opinion. Sentence 2: Explain reason. Sentence 3: Support your reason Sentence 4. Elaborate upon your reason Sentence 5: Consider opposing arguments Sentence 6: Clincher III. Body Paragraph 2 (Focus on Reason 2) IV. Body Paragraph 3 (Focus on Reason 3) V. Conclusion: Sentence 1: Grabber Sentence 2: Explain your opinion by briefly summarizing your main reasons Sentence 3: Support your reasons by summarizing the benefits of each Sentence 4: Appeal to the emotion, ethics, or logic of the reader for agreement Sentence 5: Clincher Grabber- An opening statement; a way to introduce the topic Clincher- A closing statement. A way to bring your essay to a conclusion. ****Be sure to use transition words.

7 Definition of Terms Grabber- An opening statement; a way to introduce the topic. Hook your reader with a question, quote, short anecdote, or personal experience statement. Thesis Statement: The main idea of the whole essay Transition words: Words such as first, second, as a result, which make transitions easy in the essay. Main Ideas: Each paragraph should have a main point or idea Supporting Details: Details support the main ideas Clincher- A closing statement. A way to bring your essay to a conclusion.

One topic Reasons supporting that topic Details supporting the reasons A conclusion re-stating the reasons Transition words Clear, concise, logical and informative language

9 Topic: How I Would Change the World
Brainstorm Three ways in which would like to change the world Put these three reasons on the bubble sheet
