Introduction (4-6) sentences Three Things to accomplish in the Introduction Hook – intriguing thought, statistic, question, quotation etc. used to grab the readers’ attention. Background Information – sets up the topic, what details you are writing about and what your topic specifies or covers. Thesis Statement – what is the purpose of your paper, what are you trying to prove, how will you support it. Structure

Write the Introduction: The introduction should do two things. The first part should say something interesting, surprising, personal, or dramatic about your subject to gain your reader’s attention. The second part should identify the specific focus, or thesis, of your research. Ideas for Part 1 Start out with a revealing story or quotation Give important background information Offer a series of interesting or surprising facts. Provide important definitions State your reason for choosing this subject. Structure

Graphic Representation: Inverted Triangle Your introduction paragraph should function like an inverted triangle. You want to begin with attention grabbing, broad information. Then you want to give substantial background information more centered on your specific topic to set up your paper. Finally, you want to insert your thesis statement that defines more specifically the direction, viewpoint, and details you will use to explain your topic throughout your paper. Breakdown of sentences for a body paragraph -Topic Sentence – Introduces the element you will discuss in the paragraph that is helping to support your argument for the purpose of the essay. -Concrete Detail (evidence) – Fact or claim supporting the topic sentence -Commentary – Explanation, opinion and discussion of the concrete detail and how it works to support the topic sentence and overall thesis -Concrete Detail (evidence) – same as above -Commentary – same as above -Closing Sentence – wraps up comments and information for the element discussed. Three things to accomplish in the conclusion Restate your thesis – review what the purpose for your essay is and what elements you used to discuss it. Wrap up your writing – add any final comments, opinions, or last details of information concerning your topic. Leave your reader thinking – the last statement of the essay should be thought provoking and leave your reader with a final impression about your essay argument.
