Writing Friendly Letters Pen Pals from another country are so much fun!

Friendly letters have five parts: The Heading  The Salutation (greeting)  The Body  The Closing The Signature

The Heading The heading can include your address and the date.  In casual, friendly letters, your address is not necessary. We’re going to use the school’s address. Southwest Middle School 2511 Inverness Drive Lawrence, KS 66047-1973 Heading

The Salutation (greeting) Dear_________.  The blank is for the name of the person you are writing.  After you write the person's name you put a comma ( , ) . Southwest Middle School 2511 Inverness Drive Lawrence, KS 66047-1973 Dear Juan, Greeting

The Body The body of the letter is the information you are writing in your letter. Decide what you should write about today. I would like 3 different body paragraphs. As a class decide what the 3 body paragraphs should be about. Think first Then share with your group members Now, discuss it with the whole class. What does everyone think of those ideas? Southwest Middle School 2511 Inverness Drive Lawrence, KS 66047-1973 Dear Juan, I am very excited to have you as my pen pal. I too am in the 6th grade. My school’s name is Southwest Middle School in Lawrence, KS. Body

The Closing The Closing:  In the closing the first word is capitalized and you put a comma after the last word.   Some examples of closings are: Sincerely, Your friend, (Love, Very truly yours…haha…we’re not using those!) Southwest Middle School 2511 Inverness Drive Lawrence, KS 66047-1973 Dear Juan, I am very excited to have you as my pen pal. I too am in the 6th grade. My school’s name is Southwest Middle School in Lawrence, KS. Your friend, Closing

Signature Your Signature This is your name. It goes under the closing. Southwest Middle School 2511 Inverness Drive Lawrence, KS 66047-1973 Dear Juan, Signature I am very excited to have you as my pen pal. I too am in the 6th grade. My school’s name is Southwest Middle School in Lawrence, KS. Your friend, Trey Hulse
