2 Letters have five parts:
The Date/Heading  The Greeting (salutation)  The Body  The Closing The Signature

3 The Date/Heading The date/ heading can includes the date.  In casual, friendly letters your address is not necessary. October 2, 2013 Date

4 The Greeting (salutation)
Dear_________.  The blank is for the name of the person you are writing.  After you write the person's name you put a comma ( , ) . October 2, 2013 Dear Susan, Greeting

5 The Body The body of the letter is the information you are writing in your letter. October 2, 2013 Dear Susan, I hope you will be able to come and visit next month. We are planning a special visit to the museum. My mom will call your mom later this week to make all arrangements. Be sure to bring your swimsuit when you come! We’re planning an afternoon trip to the lake. Body

6 The Closing The Closing:  In the closing the first word is capitalized and you put a comma after the last word.   Some examples of closings are: Sincerely, Your friend, Love, Very truly yours, October 2, 2013 Dear Susan, I hope you will be able to come and visit next month. We are planning a special visit to the museum. My mom will call your mom later this week to make all arrangements. Be sure to bring your swimsuit when you come! We’re planning an afternoon trip to the lake. Closing Your friend,

7 Signature Your Signature This is your name. It goes under the closing.
October 2, 2013 Dear Susan, Signature I hope you will be able to come and visit next month. We are planning a special visit to the museum. My mom will call your mom later this week to make all arrangements. Be sure to bring your swimsuit when you come! We’re planning an afternoon trip to the lake. Your friend, Allison

8 Partner Activity Take out 5 crayons- 1 Red, 1 Blue, 1 Yellow, 1 Green, and 1 Orange. Circle the date/heading with your red crayon. Underline the greeting with your blue crayon. Put a box around the body of the letter using your yellow crayon. Circle the closing with your green crayon. Put a Star next to the signature with your orange crayon.
