We write friendly letters to people we know well. We might write a friendly letter to our parents, our grandparents, or our friends.

Did you have fun visiting your parents in St. Augustine? I’ve heard that St. Augustine is a beautiful historic city by the beach. I’m enjoying my second week in North Carolina visiting my brother. He and his family just moved to a house in the mountains. Yesterday we went hiking to the top of Pilot Mountain, and tomorrow we are planning to go canoeing on the river. It’s a lot cooler here than back home in Georgia. I’m looking forward to seeing you soon. I have so much to tell you! Your friend, Susan

4 There are five parts of a friendly letter.

5 1234 Ridge Lane Atlanta, Georgia July 16, 2010 heading or July 16, 2010 The first part of a friendly letter is called the heading. The heading includes the writer’s address and the date. Sometimes only the date is included. The heading is written in the upper right-hand corner of the page.

What do you want to say to the person you are writing to? We put what we want to say in the body of the letter. The body of the letter is in paragraph form. The first line of each paragraph is indented. How has your summer been? Not too hot I hope. Did you have fun visiting your parents in St. Augustine? I’ve heard that St. Augustine is a beautiful historic city by the beach.

9 The closing and signature are the last parts of a friendly letter
The closing and signature are the last parts of a friendly letter. Your closing might be: Your friend, Yours truly, Sincerely, Love, The closing is lined up directly under the heading. It begins with a capital letter and ends with a comma. The signature is your name written directly under the closing.
