2. Friendly Letters Friendly letters have five parts: The Heading
The Salutation(Greeting)
The Body
The Closing
Your Signature

3. The Heading The heading includes the date and your address.

The heading includes the date and your address.
If you are writing to a friend, you do not have to include your address.
If you are writing to someone who you don’t know, or don’t know well, you should include your address.

4. The Salutation The salutation is also called the greeting.
Dear _________,
The blank is for the name of the person to whom you are writing.
Their name is preceded by a greeting, and followed by a comma(,).

5. The Body
The body of the letter is the information you are writing in your letter.
The body is made up of paragraphs. You must have at least one paragraph, but you may have more.
Be sure to indent each paragraph!!

6. The Closing
The closing shows the reader that you are at the end of your letter.
The first letter of the first word is capitalized.
The closing is followed by a comma (,).
Some examples of closings include: Sincerely, Your friend, Yours truly, Love always, Very truly yours,

7. Your Signature Signature is another word for your name.
Your signature is the last thing that is written on your letter.
It is written beneath the closing.

8. LET'S GET STARTED!!
Are you ready to write a friendly letter to President Obama?
Remember, you must include all the parts of a letter.

9. Write your heading. THE HEADING
On the right hand side of your paper, write today’s date.
On the next line, beneath the date, write the name of our school, then the complete address.

10. Write your salutation. THE SALUTATION Skip a line.
Go to the left hand side of the paper.
Write your salutation. Remember to capitalize the first letter of the first word, and the first letter of the person’s name.
Put a comma after their name.

11. Write your body.
After your write your salutation, skip a line and indent.
Begin your body.
Start your letter with a hook.
A hook is a catchy phrase, or question that grabs the attention of the reader.
Don’t forget to indent each paragraph!!
