Definitions: Infinitive = Cognate = The form of the verb that is untouched. In English the verb contains the word “to” in front of it. a word that looks alike AND means the same thing in two languages

Spanish Verbs ending in AR The process of using a verb in language and making it the correct form for the subject (person or object) performing the action is called _________________. For example: The correct form of the verb “to be” for “I” in English is “am” not “is.” We say “I am…” NOT “I is…” In English we say “We dance.” NOT “We dances.” etc. CONJUGATION

In order to put a verb into its correct form in Spanish, one must use the following 3-step process: Step 1: ____________________ Step 2: ____________________ “stem” is the name for the remaining portion of the verb minus the AR ending. Step 3: __________________________ __________________________ CHOP OFF THE “AR” ENDING CHECK THE STEM ADD THE APPROPRIATE ENDING THAT MATCHES THE PERSON DOING THE ACTION

The endings that are added to the stems of AR verbs in Spanish are: The ending you choose must be the ending that matches the place where each subject pronoun is found in the blue chart attached to the chalkboard. Ending 1 goes with box 1 (Yo), ending 5 goes with box 5 (vosotros), etc. O AS A AMOS ÁIS AN

Let’s try the 3-step process out on some Spanish verbs found on your vocabulary list. hablar = __________ 1.______2. ______3. Yo ______ My verb in this form means ____________. pagar = ___________ 1.______2. ______3. Nosotros _______ My verb in this form means _____________. TO SPEAK HABL HABLO I SPEAK TO PAY PAG PAGAMOS WE PAY

Here are a few more: manejar = __________ 1.______2. ______3. Tú ________ My verb in this form means ____________. cocinar = ___________ 1.______2. ______3. Ellas _________ My verb in this form means _____________. TO DRIVE MANEJ MANEJAS YOU DRIVE TO COOK COCIN COCINAN THEY COOK

Place an asterisk * beside continuar and esquiar on your vocabulary list. These two verbs have special spelling rules that we need to remember as we use them. The verb continuar adds an accent mark over the ú part of the stem in all the forms except nosotros and vosotros. In the nosotros form there is no accent mark at all. In the vosotros form, the accent mark is over the á, where it is normally found, not on the u. The verb esquiar adds an accent mark over the í part of the stem in all the forms except nosotros and vosotros. In the nosotros form there is no accent mark at all. In the vosotros form, the accent mark is over the á, where it is normally found, not on the i.

So when conjugating (putting into forms) the verbs continuar and esquiar, we must remember to go back and add the accent mark in the forms where it is necessary. continuar = ____________ 1.______2. ______3. él ___________ * go back and add the accent mark to the ú. esquiar = ____________ 1.______2. ______3. Uds. ___________ * go back and add the accent mark to the í. TO CONTINUE CONTINU CONTINÚA TO SKI ESQUI ESQUÍAN
