Picture View Provides a way for students to represent their ideas using symbols.

About Picture View

Create a Diagram in Picture View n Start a New Diagram n Save Work n Add Symbols n Use Symbol Palette n Move Symbols n Connect Symbols Using Links n Listen to Ideas n Clear Part of Diagram n Fix a Mistake n Change the Look of Symbols

Start a New Diagram n Click the Picture button. n The First Idea provides a starting point.

Save Work n Save work often. n On the File menu, click Save. n In the folder list, select the folder where you want to save the project. n Type the name, and click Save.

Add Symbols n Click the symbol to select it. n To add symbols that are connected, click the Add Symbol button.

Use Symbol Palette Pick Library button Click to choose a symbol category Next Library buttons Click to see the previous library Click to see the next library To see a preview of a symbol, point to it

Move Symbols n When symbols are moved any links will be automatically adjusted. n To move a symbol, select it, and drag it to the new location.

Connect Symbols Using Links n Select a symbol. n Click the Link Symbols button to turn it on. n Select another symbol to create a link. n Click the Link Symbols button to turn it off.

Listen to Ideas n Click the Listen button. n Select a symbol to read the word. n To turn off the Listen tool, click the Listen button again.

Clear Part of Diagram n Select a symbol to clear. n To erase the symbol, click the Clear button.

Fix a Mistake n To fix something you didn’t mean to do, click the Undo button.

Change the Look of Symbols n Select a symbol. n On the Symbol Colors tool, click the color that you want to change. n Select a new color on the color menu. n You can change any color that appears in a multicolor symbol.

Writing View Provides a way for students to represent their ideas using symbols.

Work with Ideas in Writing View n Switch to Writing View n Add an Idea n Move an Idea n Add Details n Change the Look of Ideas n Change Prefix Style n Switch to Picture View

Switch to Writing View n Click the Go to Writing button. n The ideas in the diagram are organized from top to bottom. n Picture-to-Topic Option Symbol words are automatically added. Helps emerging reader and writers make connections between symbols and words.

Add an Idea n Select an idea. n Click the Add Idea button.

Move an Idea n Click the left side of the idea. n When the grabber hand appears, drag the idea to the new location.

Add Details to an Idea n Notes are a great way to add more information about an idea. n You can add as many lines as you wish. n Click below the top line to add ideas.

Change the Look of Ideas n To change the color of text, click the Text Color button and click the color you like. n To change the font, click the arrows on the Font box. n To increase or decrease text size, click the arrows on the Text Size box.

Change Prefix Style n Writing view can be used as an outliner. n The type of letters, numbers, or bullets that mark each idea in a writing project. n On the Formatting toolbar, click the Prefix button to change style.

Switch to Picture View n To view a writing project in Picture view, click the Go to Pictures button.

Categorize Ideas Using the SuperGrouper Tool n Add a SuperGrouper Category n Add a Title n Change the Size n Change the Colors n Add Symbols n Remove a Symbol n View a SuperGrouper Diagram in Writing View

Add a SuperGrouper Category Click the SuperGrouper button Select the SuperGrouper shape

Add a Title n Select the SuperGrouper category and add the title.

Change the Size n To resize a SuperGrouper category proportionally, select it, and drag the lower right resize handle.

Change the Colors n On the Symbol Colors tool, click the color that you want to change, and select a new color on the color menu.

Add Symbols n Select symbols from the Symbol Palette and drag to a SuperGrouper category.

Remove a Symbol n Drag the symbol to a new location -or- n Select it and click the Clear button.

View a SuperGrouper Diagram in Writing View n Click the Go to Writing button. n The titles of the categories assume a top-level position. n The symbols that each SuperGrouper category contains are supporting ideas.

Add Name n Click the Student Name button. n Type your name and other information in the box where you want the information to appear.

Print Work n Go to File menu, and select Print.
