Windows Server Transition Path Before Sept 2012 After Sept 2012

Windows Server Standard 2012 (2008) Licenses required: 4 1 virtual instance per licensed server 1)You need one software license for each physical processor on a server 2)You need an additional software license for each physical processor on the server to run an additional instance of the server software in virtual operating system environments (or OSEs).

Windows Server Datacenter 2012 (2008) Licenses required: 2 The unlimited number of virtual instances per licensed server You need one software license for each physical processor on a server, which permits you to run on that server, at any one time, one instance of the server software in one physical operating system environment (or OSE), and any number of instances of the server software in virtual operating system environments (or OSEs). You may run on the licensed server an instance of Web, Standard or Enterprise (the same or any earlier version) in place of Datacenter in any operating system environment (or OSE).

Windows Server Enterprise 2008 Licenses required: 4 4 virtual instances per licensed server 1) You need one software license for each physical processor on a server, which permits you to run on that server, at any one time: one instance of the server software in one physical operating system environment (or OSE), and four instances of the server software in virtual operating system environments (or OSEs). You may run only one instance per virtual operating system environment (or OSE). You may run an instance of Standard in place of Enterprise in any of these virtual operating system environments (or OSEs). 2) For each additional set of up to four instances of the server software that you run in virtual operating system environments (or OSEs), you need an additional software license for each physical processor on the server.

What’s Changing?

Product LineupLicensing Options SAL-based Core-based

Moving from PROC license to CORE license Enterprise Standard Web

Upgrade from 2008R2 SAL to SQL Server 2012 Standard Enterprise

What is available and when? Core/SAL Datacenter Edition Enterprise Edition Standard Edition Workgroup EditionBusiness Intelligence Edition Web Edition Processor/SAL Enterprise Edition Standard Edition Business Intelligence Edition Web Edition Core/SAL

1.Count the number of Cores in the server 2.A minimum of 4 core licenses are required per physical processor 3.Purchase the appropriate number of core licenses for the server 4.Licenses are sold in packs-each pack includes 2 core licenses (2-core pack) 1.Cores will be priced at ¼ the cost of a SQL 2008 R2 Processor 2.No price increase from SQL Server 2008 R2 for processors with 1-4 cores 3.License more cores as compute capacity increases Old licensing: count processor New licensing: count cores  1 processor  4 cores

1 processor with 8 cores 8 core licenses required 1 processor with 6 cores 6 core licenses required 1 processor with 4 cores 4 core licenses required 1 processor with 2 cores 4 core licenses required Minimum of 4 core licenses required for each processor

OR

(*) 1-4 cores: Minimum of 4 core licenses required per physical processor Offered through Enterprise Edition only License all cores on physical hardware Run unlimited virtual machines on hardware 1 proc. / 2 cores* 1 x 4 core licenses* = 4 core licenses 2 proc. / 4 cores 2 x 4 core licenses = 8 core licenses 2 proc. / 2 cores* 2 x 4 core licenses* = 8 core licenses Unlimited VMs

VM with 8 virtual cores 8 core licenses required VM with 6 virtual cores 6 core licenses required VM with 4 virtual cores 4 core licenses required VM with 2 virtual cores 4 core licenses required Minimum of 4 core licenses required for each virtual machine Offered through all editions Licensing counted via virtual machines

SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard Licenses required: 4 General Terms, Option 2: Licensing based on Processors Used: Under this option, the total number of licenses required for a server equals the sum of the licenses required under (a) and (b) below. This is the only option available to you for editions other than Enterprise. a) To run instances of the server software in the physical OSE on a server, you need a license for each physical processor that the physical OSE uses. b) To run instances of the server software in virtual OSEs on a server, you need a license for each virtual processor* that each of those virtual OSEs uses. If a virtual OSE uses a fraction of a virtual processor, the fraction counts as a full virtual processor. Solely for licensing purposes, a virtual processor is considered to have the same number of threads and cores as each physical processor on the underlying physical hardware system. Note: SQL Server Standard 2008 SALs were available

SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Licenses required: 2 Exception If you assign software licenses equal to the total number of physical processors on the server you may run the server software in only up to four OSEs on the server for each license assigned without regard to the number of physical and virtual processors used. You may run on the licensed server instances of Standard in place of Enterprise in any of these OSEs. Note: SQL Server Enterprise 2008 SALs were available

SQL Server 2008 R2 Datacenter Licenses required: 2 Exception You may run the server software in one physical and any number of virtual operating system environments (or OSEs) without regard to the number of physical and virtual processors used. You may run on the licensed server instances of Enterprise or Standard in place of Datacenter in any of the operating system environments (or OSEs). Note: SQL Server Datacenter 2008 was available only by processor licenses

System Center 2012 Standard Licenses required: 4 Managing 1 server OSE on the device This license is applicable only to manage OSEs running server operating system software. You need a System Center 2012 Standard license for each physical processor in the device. Once you assign these licenses you may manage one server OSE running on the device to which the System Center 2012 Standard licenses are assigned. The additional server OSEs will require to license all physical processors again (in line with Windows Server 2012 Standard terms)

System Center 2012 Datacenter Licenses required: 2 Managing unlimited number of server OSEs on the device This license is applicable only to manage OSEs running server operating system software. You need a System Center 2012 Datacenter license for each physical processor in the device. Once you assign these licenses you may manage any number of server OSEs running on the device to which the System Center 2012 Datacenter licenses are assigned. System Center 2012 Datacenter licenses permit management by earlier versions of the System Center server software. In line with Windows Server 2012 Datacenter terms.

Core Infrastructure Suite (CIS) is the Best Value Simplicity: License the well managed and protected datacenter together on a per processor basis with unlimited virtualization rights for Datacenter edition. Cost Savings: Acquire a well managed and protected cloud at a lower cost. CIS Software Includes: Windows Server 2012 System Center 2012 Datacenter editions (unlimited virtualization) Core Infrastructure Suite Datacenter (WS 2012 DC + SC 2012 DC) Standard (WS 2012 Std + SC 2012 Std) Standard editions (for non-virtualized environments)
