An Enterprise Server ML is required for full application and server management, and a Standard Server ML can be used for operating system and basic workload management. The Enterprise Server ML can be used to manage all the basic workloads covered by the Standard Server ML, plus all advanced workloads not covered by the Standard Server ML. 1 Security basic workload information is detailed in the Microsoft PURPUR

SA Migration Path Existing licenses remain under the old licensing model until their contract expires and they renew their SA or until they purchase new licenses Customers must continue to pay SA on the base SKU in addition to paying SA on the step-up SKU

Mid-Market Offerings

FY11 Mid-Market Product Licensing Changes NEW in System Center Essentials 2010 Licensing! SCE 2007SCE 2010Benefits Technical limit Technically limited to 30 Server OSEs and 500 Client OSEs Technically limited to 50 Server OSEs and 500 Client OSEs Allow customers greater flexibility in adopting server virtualization License Type Licensed Per OSE (Additional license required for each VM added to the server or client device) Licensed required for each managed device (One license required for each physical device on which managed OSEs run. No additional license required for each VM added to the server or client device—subject to the SCE software technical limit as described above.) Greater VM densities do not trigger incremental licensing costs License Packaging Base offering 10 Server OSEs and 50 Client OSEs No required initial bundle purchase. Customers purchase the Management Server License and individual Client and Server MLs they need. Allow customers to purchase just what they need to deploy 1. System Center Essentials Plus 2010 launched on July 1, 2010. 2. Based on customer feedback, System Center has made the following changes to licensing for System Center Essentials 2010:

System Center Licensing Details – Mid-market 22 11 33 SC Essentials Server Per Instance Management Server 11 SC Essentials Plus 2010 Server ML Suite (SCE Server ML + DPM for SCE Server ML) Per licensed device Server Management License (Server ML) SC Essentials Server ML Per licensed device 22 Client Management License (Client ML) SC Essentials Plus 2010 Client ML Suite (SCE Client ML + DPM for SCE Client ML) Per licensed device SC Essentials Client ML Per licensed device 33 Management Server Licenses SCE Plus 2010 Suites do not include the rights to SCE 2010 management server software. Customers will still purchase the SCE 2010 management server (just as they would for the standalone SCE 2010 product). You do not need to purchase a DPM 2010 management server software license. The rights to use the DPM server will come with the purchase of the SCE Plus 2010 Server or Client ML. Management Licenses SCE Plus 2010 Server ML Suite and SCE 2010 have technical limits of 50 Server OSEs. SCE Plus 2010 Client ML Suite and SCE 2010 have technical limits of 500 Client OSEs.

Appendix

Service Manager FAQs Q. I want to deploy Service Manager 2010; what should I buy? A. The Service Manager 2010 licensing model requires a management server software (the application used to manage clients and servers) license and a management license (ML) for each managed operating systems environment (OSE). Service Manager 2010 licensing components are: Management Server Software: A license for the Service Manager 2010 management server software, which comes either with SQL 2008 Technology or without, is available on a per instance basis. Before you run any instance of the server software under a software license, you must assign that license to one of your servers. That server is the licensed server for that particular license. Server Management: A Service Manager 2010 Server ML must be acquired for each of the server OSEs managed by Service Manager. The Service Manager 2010 Server ML is available standalone and as a part of the Server Management Suites. A Server ML, in the Service Manager model, captures scenarios where Service Manager capabilities are being applied to a Server OSE.Server Management Suites Client Management: A Service Manager 2010 Client ML must be acquired for the client OSEs managed by Service Manager. Service Manager 2010 Client MLs are available standalone on a per-user or per-OSE basis, as a part of the Client Management Suite. And through Enterprise CAL, the Client MLs are available on a per-user and per-device basis. Client Management SuiteEnterprise CAL Q. When is a Service Manager management license (ML) required? A.
