NICE TO MEET YOU Hello! My name is Dr.T! I am a body systems specialist! I will be helping you learn all about the circulatory system! I will be sharing my thoughts on every page, so be on a lookout for them! I hope you’re ready, you’ll be a specialist too before you even know it! Before I forget, be sure to use the navigation buttons if you need them! They can help you move throughout the lesson!

THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM Blood Vessels Heart Blood The main organ for this body system is the heart.

THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM  The circulatory system is a system that works to bring oxygen and nutrients to body cells and takes away carbon dioxide and wastes.  At the center of the circulatory system is the heart! The C.S. keeps your blood moving!

THE HEART  The heart pumps blood through your blood vessels to all parts of your body.  The heart is strong and works all the time!  The heart is divided into 4 chambers.  The two upper chambers are called the left atrium and right atrium. They bring blood from the veins.  The lower chambers are called the left and right ventricle. They pump blood to the body. The atriums are at the top of the heart, think Atriums/ Attic!

THE HEART This is what your heart really looks like!

THE HEART  The heart is a powerful muscle in your chest. It is about the size of your fist.  The heart muscle is different that other muscles, because it never gets tired. Who would have thought your heart was that strong?

HEART VALVES  The heart has heart valves that open in one direction.  This keeps the blood that is carrying fresh oxygen into the body from mixing with the blood carrying carbon dioxide. Heart valves are kind of like traffic controllers. They make sure everything keeps moving in the right direction.

HEART VALVES  The heart pumps blood through your body to deliver oxygen and take away wastes like carbon dioxide.  While this is going on, the right atrium also fills with blood that has been through the body and is filled with wastes like carbon dioxide. It needs to go to the lungs. Heart valves have a very important job pumping blood.

BASICS ABOUT BLOOD  Blood is made up of several parts  The liquid part is called the plasma.  Red blood cells carry oxygen and carbon dioxide through the body.  White blood cells help the body to fight germs.  Platelets help the blood to form clots and heal cuts. The reason blood is red is because it's got iron in it. If you look down a microscope at blood, what you'll see are thousands of tiny little red cells that are referred to as bi-concave discs.

BLOOD  Blood travels through the body through blood vessels  There are 3 main types of blood vessels  An artery is a blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart. Arteries are the largest blood vessels in the body.  The smallest blood vessels are called capillaries. They are so small that only one cell can pass through at a time.  Veins are the other types of blood vessels. They carry blood to the heart. Did you know your blood looks blue sometimes?

TO SUM IT UP…  The right ventricle’s blood without oxygen goes to the lungs.  The left ventricle with fresh blood is ready to go through the body.  YOUR BLOOD CIRCULATES THROUGH YOUR BODY IN ONE MINUTE!!!!! The circulatory system keeps you alive and is constantly working!

LET’S SEE WHAT YOU REMEMBER! What is the main organ of the circulatory system?  Heart  Lungs  Stomach  Blood  Skull You’re so smart, the heart! Keep it up!

LET’S SEE WHAT YOU REMEMBER! What take the blood away from the heart?  Atrium  Arteries  Veins You guessed it, the arteries! Awesome job!

LET’S SEE WHAT YOU REMEMBER! How many chambers is the heart made up of?  5  3  4  2 That’s right, 4! Way to go!
