1 Circulatory System

2 Vocabulary Lesson 5 1. artery – a blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart 2. vein – a blood vessel that carries blood toward the heart 3. capillary – a tiny blood vessel that carries blood from arteries to veins

3 4. Oxygen – blood carries this through the body for fuel
5. Carbon Dioxide – blood carries this waste product away from cells 6. atrium – an upper chamber in your heart 7. ventricle – a lower chamber in your heart

4 Circulatory System 1. What is your blood?
a. Red Blood Cells – carry oxygen throughout the body b. White Blood Cells – help fight infection and prevent disease c. Platelets – help the blood clot if a blood vessel is injured…scabs are dried clots

5 d. Most of the red blood seen with a cut is made up of a clear, light-yellow liquid called plasma, which is mostly water

6 Fun facts about blood A newborn baby has about 1 cup of blood in circulation Blood cells are tiny!!! 60,000 could fit in the dot of an i In one day, blood travels 12,000 miles

7 2. Heart a. Hollow, muscular and about the size of your fist
b. A wall divides the right side from the left and each side has an upper and lower half (4 chambers) c. Upper chamber – atrium d. Lower chamber – ventricle

8 e. Right ventricle pumps blood to lungs to get oxygen and give off carbon dioxide
f. Left ventricle pumps oxygen rich blood to the rest of your body where the cells take the oxygen from the blood and give carbon dioxide g. Blood flows back to the atrium on the right side of your heart
