YOUR CIRCULATORY SYSTEM How does it work? Why does a doctor check your pulse and blood pressure? What is your blood type and why is it important?

The Transport System CIRCULATORY SYSTEM –Your body’s transport system. –Keeps the body working well. By delivering essential materials to body cells and removing waste materials from the cells. »THIS BODY SYSTEM IS ALSO KNOWN AS THE CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM.

How the Circulatory System works Blood carries substances through Circulatory System Organs serve as transfer stations –Blood picks up nutrients and delivers them to cells Wastes and removes them from body

Parts of the Circulatory System Heart Blood Vessels Blood

HEART Is a muscle that pumps, and moves blood in 2 major pathways 1.Pulmonary Circulation (Lungs to Heart and back – Oxygen/Carbon Dioxide) 2.Systemic Circulation (Heart to Body and back)

HEART The heart is divided into 4 chambers –Each upper chamber is called ATRIUM –Each lower chamber is called VENTRICLE * VALVES open and close to control the flow of blood

Blood Vessels Over 80,000 miles of blood vessels move your blood throughout your body Three types of blood vessels 1. Arteries 2. Veins 3. Capillaries

Arteries Carry blood away from the heart

Veins Carry blood back to the heart

Capillaries Tiny tubes that carry blood from the arteries to the body’s cells and from cells to the veins

Blood A mixture of solids in a large amount of liquid called plasma BLOOD Red blood cells White blood cells Platelets Plasma –Is about 92% water

Parts of Blood Red blood cells – carry oxygen to the cells and carbon dioxide away from the cells. White blood cells – help fight disease and infection by attacking germs that enter the body Platelets – help blood clot, which seals cuts and prevents excess blood loss from a wound

More about Blood Blood is essential to life Your blood is not the same as everyone else’s Blood transfusions –Blood must match –Mixing blood could have serious side effects High fevers, difficulty breathing, and even death

Blood Types AB ABO

BLOOD TYPE What's Your Blood Type.mht

Positive or Negative Blood Rh + –Blood does contain Rh factor (Blood protein) Rh – –Blood does not contain Rh factor (No blood protein)

(RH) FACTOR Rh factor in blood.doc

Blood Banks People of age can donate blood Only people in good health can donate A new needle is used every time blood is drawn All donated blood is tested for disease

Blood Pressure As blood moves through your body, it exerts pressure against the walls of blood vessels Sphygmomanometer – instrument that measures blood pressure

Cardiovascular Disorders Stroke Heart attack Arteriosclerosis Hypertension –High blood pressure Anemia Sickle-cell anemia Mononucleosis Leukemia Hemophilla

Cardiovascular Disorders Open to page 303 Write the descriptions to each disorder in your notes
