Assan Bashir Media Studies Music Magazine Production

Magazine Analysis 1 This magazine has used a lot of presentational devices such as the big ‘XXL’ logo in the background, half of it is covered up because people already know just by looking at the image. The rapper on the magazine is ‘Dwayne Carter’ AKA ‘Lil Wayne’ he is dressed up as a astronaut to signify the idea of begin the first man to do something and he is the first Black rapper to Sell millions of albums in a short amount of time. The title ‘Wayne’s World’ has been taken from the movie ‘Wayne’s world’ and shows that ‘Lil Wayne’ owns the world. This magazine is dedicated to him because he is on the cover of it, and has one of his quotes which says “ I am on another level. So rappers be scared.”

On this Magazine you again have the large ‘XXL’ logo which signifies that whatever you see in this magazine it will be BIG. On the sides you have what will be in the magazine, so you get a little preview so the audience will become a lot more interested. The main image is of ‘Nasier Jones’ AKA NAS he is another notorious rapper and has sold a number of hit albums world wide. This magazine is dedicated to him because you have the little story about him under the image and what will be in the magazine about him. All the quotes are a sign of ownership because they are on the cover not in the magazine. Magazine Analysis 2

On this magazine you again have “Lil Wayne” and the subtitle is his name which again signifies that sense of ownership and the quote which says “I’m not hot. I’m Great” which shows he has a lot of confidence in himself and how he wants to be portrayed by his audience. The first part of his name is spelt in a fancy style writing and the rest is in normal. You have on the right hand side who else in going to be included in magazine and the little title that reads “A decade of Dominance” which says the magazine you are seeing is the best and has dominated all other magazines. Magazine Analysis 3

In this magazine the main image is Rapper ‘Shawn Carter’ AKA ‘Jay Z’ he is dressed up all smart and almost looks like a gangster, this is because he is promoting the hit movie ‘American Gangster’ and the magazine displays his name is big letters. You again have the BIG ‘XXL’ logo identifying the producer of the biggest hip hop magazine out there. Again on the right hand side you have who else will be featured in the magazine and gives you a brief outline of the criteria. Magazine Analysis 4

Questionnaire The questionnaire I have constructed is specifically designed to pinpoint exactly what the audience wants in a music magazine without have any other style of genre or anything which the audience may not like in the magazine. I have also only asked eight questions which gets straight to the point and therefore will keep the audience more attentive to the questionnaire so they don’t just tick any box without reading the questions. By doing this and having questions I have will guarantee an accurate tally of results. I have handed out 50 questionnaires so it is easier to add the results up. Music magazine Gender: Male□ Female□ Age: □ □ □ □ 25+□ What genre of music do you listen to? Dub step □ Hip hop □ R&B □ Rock □ Pop □ What is your favourite colour? Black□ Red□ Blue□ Pink□ Gold□ Silver□ Do you like writing which Stand’s out? Yes□ No□ Are you a student? Yes□ No□ What are you hobbies? Reading □ drawing □ writing □ running □ shopping □ Latest Fashion □ How would you describe by using the list below? Chav□ Emo□ Grunge □ Rocker □ Townie □ None of the above□

Results Analysis Graph 1 : Gender The graph shows that there is an equal number of males and females who have been asked to answer my questionnaire so both sexes have an equal chance to answer and be included into the final result. I have also done this because some male and females share the same interests so they can both enjoy the magazine by it having things they can relate to.

Results Analysis Graph 2 : Age This graph displays the age range of the people who answered my questionnaire and clearly you can see that year olds are the people who have most commonly answered my questionnaire, I can now start preparing my magazine and make it relate to the younger audiences and they will stay interested when reading and even when they see the cover of my magazine.

Results Analysis Graph 3 : Genre This graph shows different music genres and the two that are the most popular in the graph are Dub Step and Hip Hop. I can now see what people want in the magazine so I can begin to research the two genres and the magazine which are dedicated to them and just get my ideas from there.

Results Analysis Graph 4: Colours Graph 4 shows the different colours that were available to tick on the questionnaire. The results show that black and red were the two popular colours therefore I shall be applying them to the finished product.

Results Analysis Graph 5:Writing This graphs shows the results of the question if people liked writing that stood out or not, 45 people ticked yes, therefore I will have bold and eye catching writing. Having writing which stands out is good because it will catch the readers eye more.

Results Analysis Graph 6: Students This graphs show how many people were students who answered my questionnaire and it shows that all 50 people have answered are students. I will now aim to make the magazine as entertaining and make it relate to student life and so on, so I may use students as the cover of my magazine.

Results Analysis Graph 7 : Hobbies The graph shows what peoples hobbies are and what ones are the most common and from this I will relate all the popular hobbies and put them into one big theme. asking people their hobbies will help me create the perfect mood magazine so people can relate to everything in the magazine.

Results Analysis Graph 8:Status Lastly I have asked everyone what they would be from the list below and a vast amount on the ticks were in the “None of the above” box, this is good because I can all the different types of statuses and make one big mass culture magazine. This will definitely guarantee a big seller because it isn’t one thing is many things and that’s what people want in a magazine.

Plan 1: Measurements In the image displayed I began to use guidelines so I could see how when I began to layout the text exactly where it would go leaving all the accurate places in which the magazine folds and where items are usually put on a magazine. This also helped me on how much writing I could actually put on it because I have to add images to the page also and minor dates and so on.

Plan 2 : Double Page Spread This is a sample of what my magazine may look like, I have put in all the text I will put into my final piece and see how it will looks, so if there is something I don’t like then I can change it straight away. I have also put an image to see how the text will fit with a image and lastly I have added my own background which I created by blending images I took into one.

Final Design : Front Cover I have devised this final front cover by using a boy as the main image and I have used a tag line at the top, to give the magazine a introduction and also I used a personalised barcode. I have used this main image because it is relevant to the genre of music and I have made all the writing fit round the image and you would usually see this on a hip hop magazine. I have used tag lines at the top right of the magazine to show what else this magazine will include, I have also used a multi coloured background it make it eye catching I font I have used I created from a website I discovered and I have done so for my content page and the double page spread.

Final Design 3: Content On this final design I have used all the conventions I used on the front cover and double page spread, which was the bright colours and the background and so on. I have also used contrast colours to give the magazine a more eye catching effect and so people will definitely want to open the magazine and read on to see the information displayed.

Final Design : Double Page Spread In my final design of my double page spread I have used 3 images I have taken of the boy. all the images I took and I have also used a picture of the union jack and I have blended in the writing. This will also give it an eye catching vibe and the readers will remain interested. I used blue and red text to blend in with the union jack flag and I have used black writing for the quotes and used a blue background for them.

Evaluation My product has all the features a typical hip hop magazine would to attract people to buy it and it displays the eye catching font, the bright colours and the star of the genre who is associated with the magazine. all these features will guarantee a top seller because it has the same things, but also its own little unique selling points i.e. the boy doing his own pose, not much writing on the title page so it gets straight to the point and so on. My product show the new era of music which is Dubstep, but there isn’t a particular group of people that listen to it yet because it has just become a big hit and needs time to advance into different cultures. Any music industry will distribute my magazine, because it is a new Genre of music that is being introduced to the world, so all major distributors will want a part of this new genre, so when it does go big a i.e. global, they will make big money on it. I think my audience would be anyone from the ages of 16 onwards, because it is in its own different league, because it is all different crazy beats put into one big mix, with sample lyrics from everywhere i.e. movies, other song and so on, so I think people will want to experiment with the new genre and will try to blend into its own unique style. I used different styles of writing to attract people to it, I introduced the hottest new artist to the scene of Dubstep and people will begin to listen to him because he is new one the scene, because it is a boy not really a man, people maybe inspired to go into music. I have learnt a lot about production such as how to devise a good product and how to use photo shop, what I need to do to make it look presentable and how it will make consumers more interested in buying my product and how it will help in long term issues such as when I have to devise another product using photo shop. I feel I have learnt a lot from making my final piece it is more presentable and I have used all the resources I possible can, this final product has definitely compensated for my preliminary task because this is a lot more visually entertaining to look at and makes you want to read on because it is a new genre on the scene, also the unique layout I have used to add that extra empathises to the finished piece helps the reader make the decision on whether they want to buy the magazine or not.
