TED TALKS Ethos, Pathos, Logos

Ethos A speaker’s ability to build credibility, establish himself/herself as an expert, and/or convince the audience members that the speaker has cares about them.

Examples of Ethos: When a speaker comes to the stage and talks about how many years they’ve been studying something, or how many times they’ve tried an experiment. They might also tell you what university they went to and what their degree is in.

Pathos An appeal to emotions (everything from humor to horror) in order to sway an audience to think a certain way.

Examples of Pathos: When the speaker tells the audience a sad story When the speaker shows terrifying or sad pictures of abused animals to make an audience feel like donating money.

Logos The use of data/evidence to prove one’s case.

An Example of Logos: When the speaker uses numbers of people who died in the 9/11 attacks, or statistics about obesity in America When the speaker states a shocking statistic about how many abused children there are in Idaho. This is meant to get the audiences attention.
