Ethos is an appeal based on the reputation or character of the speaker. Can also be an appeal based on shared values or shared ethics—speaker tries to establish credibility and trustworthiness/likeablilty. Logos Pathos

Ethos is an appeal based on the reputation or character of the speaker. Can also be an appeal based on shared values or shared ethics—speaker tries to establish credibility and trustworthiness/likeablilty. Logos is an appeal based on facts and logic. The speaker uses reasoning, logical organization, or data, etc.. (Be careful not to confuse logos with detail). Pathos

Audience knows/admires speaker = speaker can instruct/argue without establishing ethos Audience has never heard of speaker = speaker has to establish ethos Ignorant/complacent audience = use pathos to shock Audience against speaker’s position = more logos
