I. Toward Freedom: Struggles for Independence B. Explaining African and Asian Independence 1.Contradictions of the colonial empires: Christianity and colonization? Enlightenment? Democracy? 2.A new international climate after WWII: UK, France, Holland weak, could not afford colonies; United Nations offered new forum for anti- colonialism. 3.New elites challenged colonial rule: western- educated, military service, how to mobilize masses.

II. Comparing Freedom Struggles A. The Case of India: Ending British Rule 1.What was “Indian?: diverse, most identified with region, cast or religion 2.Indian National Congress, 1885: initially argued for inclusion in British Empire; then called for independence 3.Impact of WWI: unfulfilled British promises; violent repression; economic deprivation, influenza pandemic

Mandela released in 1990, began negotiations; elections: ANC won 63% of vote.

III. Experiments with Freedom A. Experiments in Political Order: Party, Army, and the Fate of Democracy 1.Democracy in India but not so much elsewhere 2.Economic failure and ethnic conflict in Africa: many politicians found ethnic politics more powerful in mobilizing; led to civil war: e.g. Nigerian civil war and Rwandan genocide. 3.Army rule pushed aside weak civilian party politics by military coup; brought some order to chaotic societies, but no democracy (e.g Idi Amin’s Uganda).

III. Experiments with Freedom A. Experiments in Political Order: Party, Army, and the Fate of Democracy 4.Leftist politics and military coups in Latin America 5.Allende (d. 1973), the CIA, and Pinochet in Chile 6.Yet, especially after 1989, there were various transitions to democracy
