Middle Colonies- Definitions Proprietary colony- Colony in which the king gave land to proprietors in exchange for a yearly payment Cash crop- Crop sold for money Backcountry- Area of land along the eastern slopes of the Appalachian Mountains. Subsistence Farming- Growing only what your family needs. Quaker- A peaceful religion set up in Pennsylvania. Believed all people were equals.

The Middle Passage and Triangular Trade It was called the triangular trade because of the triangular shape that the three legs of the journey made. The first leg was the journey from Europe to Africa where goods were exchanged for slaves. The second, or middle, leg of the journey was the transportation of slaves to the Americas. It was nicknamed the 'middle passage.' The third and final leg of the journey,  was the transport of goods from the Americas back to Europe.

Triangular Trade

All Colonies Port cities were very important because they were the center of shipping and trade. The Mercantile System Like other European nations at the time, England believed that colonies existed for the benefit of the home or mother country. This belief was part of an economic theory known as mercantilism. According to this theory, a nation becomes strong by building up its gold supply and expanding its trade. Since exporting helps a country earn money, it is the belief that a country should export more than it imports.
