4 THE MIDDLE COLONIES New York (Proprietary Colony) Any of certain early North American colonies, such as Carolina and Pennsylvania, organized in the 17th century in territories granted by the English Crown to one or more proprietors who had full governing rights. New Jersey (became a royal colony) a colony governed directly by the crown through a governor and council appointed by it Pennsylvania (William Penn and the Quakers) Delaware

6 WHY DID COLONISTS COME TO AMERICA?
Religious Dissenters (opposed state interference with Religious practice_ Church of England 1534 and became the established church by an Act of Parliament. Economic opportunities Land

7 RELIGIOUS DISSENTERS Disagreed with the Anglican Church (Church of England) Puritans of Massachusetts (wanted to purify the Anglican Church) Called themselves Pilgrims; did not believe in toleration. (tolerance of other religions) Puritans of Mass. accused nonbelievers of witchcraft. (Salem Witch Trials)

8 ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY Colonists came to America seeking land and riches. Some worked as indentured servants to gain passage to America. Signed contract to work for 7 years for payment of travel to US. After 7 years could earn freedom Disagreement over Native American lands led to “Bacon’s Rebellion.”

9 Bacon’s Rebellion Virginia Governor Walker was preventing land expansion, and kept settlers from taking Indian land. Nathaniel Bacon disagreed with this and found some practices (Illegal Indian Trade) Led attacks on the Colonial Government Main lesson –Many settlers were against government restriction.

10 THE ISSUE OF SLAVERY (That “peculiar institution”)
Africans brought to America against their will. Worked on large southern farms called plantations. Initially grew rice, tobacco, and indigo. TRIANGULAR TRADE-Colonists traded rum in Africa for slaves; slaves were transported to the West Indies (Middle Passage) in exchange for sugar and molasses to make rum in America.
