Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Ruiz y Picasso a.k.a. Pablo Picasso He was born in Málaga, Spain in Amongst his first words, was the word “piz” when he asked his mother for a “lapiz” to draw with. His father was an art teacher who trained him in painting.

His first painting at age 8. By age 13, he was accepted to art school. His first painting at age 8. By age 13, he was accepted to art school.

Talented or not? All of these paintings were painted before his 18 th birthday.

He was so talented, he mastered painting like the masters by this age. After dropping out of the best art school in Spain, Picasso traveled to Paris. Portrait of Gertrude Stein (1906) Family of Saltibanques (1905) During this time, he was so poor he had to burn his own paintings for warmth.

 Luckily, he met a woman named Gertrude Stein who would help launch his career.

Picasso’s work is sorted into “periods”. Each period is distinctive for the style, mood, and colors he used. His Blue Period is full of sad, serious paintings mostly done in blues and greens. This period began after the death of a good friend. Femme aux Bras Croisés (1902) The Old Guitarist (1903) El período azul

His Rose Period was a bit more upbeat, using oranges and pinks and featuring many circus people and acrobats. Harlequins would become a symbol for Picasso that would repeat in his paintings for years. El Periodo Rosado

Picasso was hugely successful during his long career, earning enough money to live very well and being a celebrity. In addition to his enormous body of work he also had a film career, appearing in several films. He always played himself. Pablo Picasso died on April 8, 1973 in Mougins, France while he and his wife were having a dinner party Picasso was an extremely prolific artist, creating 1,885 paintings, 1,228 sculptures, 2,880 ceramics, about 12,000 drawings, thousands of prints and many tapestries and rugs.

How much is it worth?

Since Picasso created so much art and it is valued so highly today, his art is amongst the most stolen worldwide. As of this year, over 500 Picasso’s have been reported missing.
