1 Pablo Picasso (1881-1973)

2 Picasso was born in Malaga, Spain. He was baptized Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Ruiz y Picasso, but most people know him simply as Picasso.

3 Picasso’s father was a realistic painter who often portrayed birds or wild game in his work. “Realism” is a technique in which the artist is true to life. In his youth, Picasso also studied this form, moving into various mediums such as painting, sculpture, drawing and architecture. medium (n.) – form in which a message is conveyed medium (adj.)- the middle range in size

4 Picasso made his first trip to Paris in 1900. In 1905 he became friends with the famous American art collector Gertrude Stein, who introduced him to many influential French painters.

5 Dora Maar au Chat (1941) This is just one of the many models, and lovers, that Picasso had in his lifetime. Others include: Fernande Olivier, Eva Gouel, Olga Khokhlova, Marie-Therese Walter, Franciose Gilot, and Sylvette David.

6 Picasso had 4 children to 3 different women. Two of his lovers killed themselves after he died– Jacqueline Roque by gunshot and Francoise Gilot by hanging. It is said that Picasso did not have a physical relationship with Sylvette David, and the two simply inspired one another.

7 This is one of Sylvette’s paintings entitled Devon. While she was establishing her career as an artist. Sylvette signed her work under her married name Lydia Corbett. Once she became famous on her own accord, She added “Sylvette David” to her paintings along with her pseudonym.

8 A pseudonym is a name somebody creates in order to remain anonymous, or unknown. In the past, pseudonyms were often used by female writers in order to sell their books. Anarchist, or antigovernment, writers often use pseudonyms as well to protect themselves.

13 Analytic cubism (1909–1912) is a style of painting Picasso developed along with Georges Braque using monochrome brownish and neutral colors. Both artists took apart objects and “analyzed” them in terms of their shapes- Wikipedia This is the art form for which Picasso is the most famous.

15 Picasso is known for his political paintings as well. This painting is Guernica, and it is one of his most famous works. It depicts the bombing of a Spanish City during the Spanish Civil War.
