Repaso  The indicative: This mood shows what is true, real or actually happening. Indicative refers to present, past, future and other tenses.  Imperative: Commands. ¡Lava los platos! ¡No laves los platos!  ¡Ud lave los platos!  Formal commands have the same conjugation as the subjunctive.

What is the subjunctive?  The subjunctive is a mood in Spanish  Deals with doubt, desire, emotion  Follows:  Impersonal Expressions + que  Doubt + que  Emotion + que  Indirect commands + que

Impersonal Expressions  Present an aspect of uncertainty or subjectivity, which triggers the subjunctive.

Ejemplos  Es bueno que  Es importante que  Es lógico que  Es malo que  Es mejor que  Es posible que  Es probable que  Es raro que  Es triste que  Es ridículo que  It’s good that  It’s important that  It’s logical that  It’s bad that  It’s better that  It’s possible that  It’s probable that  It’s rare that  It’s sad that  It’s ridiculous that

¡Ojo! These expressions DON’T need subjunctive  Es evidente que  Es obvio que  Es verdad que  No hay duda que  It’s evident that  It’s obvious that  It’s true that  There’s no doubt that Since these expressions show certainty, no subjunctive is necessary

In order to be the best student it’s good that you study every day. Para ser el mejor alumno es bueno que tú estudies cada día.

In order to be the best student it’s necessary that you do the homework every day. Para ser el mejor alumno es necesario que tú hagas la tarea todos los días.

In order to be the best student it’s important that you raise your hand in class. Para ser el mejor alumno es importante que levantes la mano en clase.

In order to be in shape it’s necessary that you exercise. Para estar en forma es necesario que hagas ejercicio.

In order to be in shape it’s logical that you don’t eat a lot of dessert. Para estar en forma es lógico que no comas mucho postre.

In order to be in shape it’s probable that you lift weights. Para estar en forma es probable que levantes pesas.

Expressions of Doubt  Dudar que  Es dudoso que  Es incierto que  No es cierto que  No creer que  No estar seguro de que  No pensar que  To doubt that  It’s doubtful that  It’s uncertain that  It’s not certain that  To not believe that  To not be sure that  To not think that
