Parts 1.How it Began 2.Timeline 3.Participating Countries 4.Battles 5.Weapons 6.Women, The home front 7.Cost 8.Military Leaders 9.League of nations 10.Aftermath

1. How it began Austria-Hungary, unsatisfied with Serbia's response to her decision, declared war on Serbia on 28 July Russia, bound by treaty to Serbia, announced mobilization of its vast army in her defense, a slow process that would take around six weeks to complete.

1.How it began(cont.) Germany, allied to Austria-Hungary by treaty, viewed the Russian mobilization as an act of war against Austria-Hungary, and after scant warning declared war on Russia on 1 August. United States President Woodrow Wilson declared U.S. neutrality, an official stance that would last until 1917 when Germany's policy of unrestricted submarine warfare -forced the U.S. to finally enter the war on 6 April 1917.

2.Timeline The Great War spanned four years and involved many nation states. This section illustrates the landmark events of the period June 28 - Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne of Austro-Hungarian empire, in Sarajevo, Bosnia July 29 - December 9 Austria-Hungary repeatedly invades Serbia but is repeatedly repulsed August 3- Germany declares war on France August 4- Britain declares war on Germany

2.Timeline(cont.) August 14- Battle of the Frontiers begins August 23- Japan declares war on Germany August Battle of Tannenberg, which Russia loses; Germany's greatest success of the war on Eastern Front September 9-14 First Battle of Masurian Lakes, which Russia loses

3. Participating Countries The war had most of the world fighting (hence, world war) here are the countries who participated. Austria-Hungary Russia Germany France Britain United States Japan Italy

4. Battles Many battles were fought, won and lost, here are some of them. The Western Front The Eastern Front The Gallipoli Front The Italian Front The Palestine Front The Mesopotamian Front The African The War at Sea The Far East

5.Weapons The right weapons are key in any war. Bayonets Flamethrowers Grenades Machine Guns Pistols Poison Gas Rifles Tanks Trench Mortars

6.Women on the home front The war revolutionised the industrial position of women - it found them serfs and left them free. The war did offer women increased opportunities in the paid labour market.

7.Cost United States : 22,625,253,000 Great Britain : 35,334,012,000 France : 24,265,583,000 Russia : 22,293,950,000 Italy : 12,413,998,000 Belgium : 1,154,468,000 Romania : 1,600,000,000 Japan : 40,000,000 Serbia : 399,400,000

8.Military Leaders ) Nicholas II was the last czar of Russia. ( ) ( ) Kaiser Wilhelm II Vittorio Emmanuelle Orlando ) Woodrow Wilson.

9. League of Nations The League of Nations was to be based in Geneva, Switzerland. This choice was natural as Switzerland was a neutral country and had not fought in World War One. No one could dispute this choice especially as an international organization such as the Red Cross was already based in Switzerland.

9. League of Nations (cont.) The country, whose president, Woodrow Wilson, had dreamt up the idea of the League - America - refused to join it. As America was the world’s most powerful nation, this was a serious blow to the prestige of the League. However, America’s refusal to join the League, fitted in with her desire to have an isolationist policy throughout the world.

10. Aftermath of the war By the war's end, four major imperial powers—the German, Russian, Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman Empires—had been militarily and politically defeated. The latter two ceased to exist. The revolutionized Soviet Union emerged from the Russian Empire, while the map of central Europe was completely redrawn into several smaller states.
