5 WWI – Event Timeline 1914 June – assassination
July – Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia August – Germany declares war on Russia & France Why?: Russia mobilizes to protect Serbia; France allied with Russia Germany uses Schlieffen Plan: called for a quick sweep through France and then defeat Russia August – Great Britain declares war on Germany (allies with France & Russia) October – Turkey joins Central Powers

6 The Western Front – Schlieffen Plan
Germany used the Schlieffen Plan – 2-front war Germany thought they could quickly defeat France and then focus all forces on Russia Problem: France decides to fight Neither Germany nor France can break enemy lines - stalemate Result: Trench Warfare Click on the Schlieffen Plan (above) to watch an animation of the military plan.

7 The Eastern Front Russian quickly moves into eastern Germany but, loses the first 2 battles – no longer seen as a threat Austria-Hungary, Germany & Bulgaria eliminate Serbia Bonus: Morale is up and they are able to move back west
