The Giver By Lois Lowry

Create what you think would be the “perfect” community Pre- Reading Activity Create what you think would be the “perfect” community Name it and give a physical description Devise rules and regulations What kind of future growth does it have? How do people spend their days? What role does memories of the past have? What does our community need to meet their standards?

The Giver Jonas’s world is perfect. Everything is under control. There is no war or fear or pain. There are no choices. Every person is assigned a role in the Community. When Jonas turns twelve, he is singled out to receive special training from The Giver. The Giver alone holds the memories of the true pain and pleasure of life. Now it’s time for Jonas to receive the truth. There is no turning back. Lois Lowry

Chapters 1-3 How do you feel about the aging ceremony? Are you comfortable with the idea of children being given to parents? Do you think that they have a good way of keeping everyone equal?

How do you feel about the “family units”? Do you think that they would work in our world today? Do you like the idea of the units? Do you have any questions about the novel so far?

Chapters 4-6 What do you think about not choosing your spouse? How do you feel about not having control over what children you have?

Does it sit well with you that you cannot choose your own job? Do you think that the plans they have in their community would work for our world today? Any questions you have for me?

Chapters 7-9 How do you think that you would feel if you were in Jonas’s shoes? Would you be willing to take on the great responsibility that is asked of him?

Do you feel the same way Jonas does about asking liars if they lie? Would you take advantage of the new rights that he was given? Do you have any predictions of what you think might happen in the next three chapters?

Writing Activity Describe something like you are seeing it for the very first time. Use your five senses to describe what you see, hear, feel, touch, and smell. It can be about ANYTHING so use your imagination!!!!!

Chapters 10-12 How do you feel about the idea of Sameness? Do you think that it could work in our world today? How do you think you would react to seeing color for the first time?

How do you think you would feel if you didn’t know what snow was and was first introduced to it? What do you think about the idea of genetic scientists making everyone the same? Do these chapters bring on any new questions or predictions of what is to come?

Research Activity Jonas’s Community talks a lot about Sameness. In order to achieve this, there had to be some form of Survival of the Fittest. Do a little bit of research to find out what Survival of the Fittest is. Do you think that this is what was used to create Sameness? Do you think that this would work in society today? What, if any, problems do you see with this thought plan?

Do you agree that it is safer not to make your own decisions? Do you feel that Jonas will be able to continue his training to become the Receiver? Do you have any thoughts about how they go about twins in the Community? Could you make the decision that Jonas’s dad made?

Chapters 16-18 Can you imagine not knowing what love and grandparents were? What do you think Jonas means when he says that love is dangerous? How do you feel about Jonas’s parents telling him that love is meaningless? Do you agree with that statement?

What do you think about Jonas becoming able to lie? Do you notice his growth? How would you react to feeling lonely? How do you feel about Rosemary’s incident? “Memories are forever” What does this statement mean to you?

Chapters 19-21 What were your reactions to finding out what the Release Ceremony really was? How does this make you feel? Is it safe to say that this was Jonas’s breaking point?

Do you think that the plan will work? Do you think that Jonas had a point when he said that everyone should have to share the memories? How did you feel about finding out that Rosemary was The Giver’s daughter?

Would you have taken Gabe as well? Do you think Jonas used his training properly to help save them both from the search planes?
