EDT Floor Plan Design-Bathrooms1 Weekend Cabin Retreat Project Designing the Floor Plan - Bathrooms Sacramento City College EDT 300

EDT Floor Plan Design- Bathrooms Number of Bathrooms u All homes require at least one bathroom. u Most modern homes have 1-1/2 or more. u Ideally, every bedroom should have its own bath, however this is seldom possible.

EDT Floor Plan Design- Bathrooms Bathroom Location u Bathrooms should be located near the bedroom and living areas of the house. u If the house is small, one bath may be sufficient. u In this case, locate the bathroom in a place where it will be most convenient.

EDT Floor Plan Design- Bathrooms Floor Plan - Bathroom

EDT Floor Plan Design- Bathrooms Bathroom Location u A half bath is one that does not have all three major fixtures. u It usually has only a water closet and lavatory. u A three-quarters bath has a lavatory, water closet, and shower.

EDT Floor Plan Design- Bathrooms Bathroom Location u For years designers have emphasized the importance of locating baths close together and near the kitchen to reduce cost.

EDT Floor Plan Design- Bathrooms Bathroom Location u Granted, the cost will be less if baths share a common wall or are placed above or below one another. u However, this is a rather minor consideration compared to convenience and function.

EDT Floor Plan Design- Bathrooms Bathroom Location u It is desirable to design a functional bath, and to place the bath in the most convenient location.

EDT Floor Plan Design- Bathrooms Bathroom Size/Layout u A minimum size bath is 5' x 8’. u A large bath may be u 10' x 10’; u 10' x 12', or u larger.

EDT Floor Plan Design- Bathrooms Bathroom Size/Layout u A family bathroom will require more countertop and storage space than a guest bath. u Most people prefer ample space for dressing, linen storage, and personal items.

EDT Floor Plan Design- Bathrooms

EDT Floor Plan Design- Bathrooms Bathroom Fixtures u The three primary fixtures found in most bathrooms are u lavatory u water closet u tub or shower.

EDT Floor Plan Design- Bathrooms Bathroom Fixtures u The arrangement of the fixtures determines whether or not the bath is truly functional. u A mirror should be placed above the sink u Arrange the mirror so it will be well lighted.

EDT Floor Plan Design- Bathrooms Bathroom Fixtures u Provide ample space for each fixture in the room. u Most water closets require a space of at least 30" wide for installation. u Allow 36" for a handicapped person.

EDT Floor Plan Design- Bathrooms Bathroom Fixtures

EDT Floor Plan Design- Bathrooms Bathroom Fixtures u Water closets should be place so that they are not visible from another room when the bathroom door is open.

EDT Floor Plan Design- Bathrooms Bathroom Fixtures u Water closets are produced in a number of styles. u The older style had a separate tank and stool. u Most newer styles are one-piece units, either floor or wall-mounted. u Wall-mounted water closets make cleaning easier and are more accessible for persons in wheelchairs.

EDT Floor Plan Design- Bathrooms Bathroom Fixtures

EDT Floor Plan Design- Bathrooms Bathroom Fixtures-Tubs u Bathroom fixtures vary in size. u Regular bathtubs range in size from 54 to 72 inches long and 28 to 32 inches wide. u The most common size is 30" x 60".

EDT Floor Plan Design- Bathrooms Bathroom Fixtures-Tubs u It is accepted practice to install a shower above the tub. u This provides the convenience of both and does not require two separate facilities. u Tubs may also have such safety features as nonskid bottoms and grab rails.

EDT Floor Plan Design- Bathrooms Bathroom Fixtures-Showers u Prefabricated showers are available in metal, fiberglass, and plastics. u More luxurious showers are usually made of ceramic tile, terrazzo, marble, or similar materials. u Common shower sizes range from u 30" x 30" u 36" x 48".

EDT Floor Plan Design- Bathrooms Bathroom Fixtures-Showers

EDT Floor Plan Design- Bathrooms Bathroom Fixtures-Showers

EDT Floor Plan Design- Bathrooms Bathroom Fixtures-Showers

EDT Floor Plan Design- Bathrooms Bathroom Fixtures u Sink cabinets or vanities provide much- needed countertop and storage space. u Twin lavatories are functional when more than one person must share the bathroom.

EDT Floor Plan Design- Bathrooms

EDT Floor Plan Design- Bathrooms Bathroom Fixtures u Lavatories can be circular or rectangular shape as well as other shapes. u The wall-mounted and pedestal models, are once again becoming popular. u A variety of vanity base units is available.

EDT Floor Plan Design- Bathrooms

EDT Floor Plan Design- Bathrooms Bathroom Requirements u A bathroom must have ventilation. u This maybe provided by windows or an exhaust fan. u If windows are used, care must be taken to locate them properly. u Window placement should be such that a draft is not produced over the tub and maximum privacy is secured.

EDT Floor Plan Design- Bathrooms Bathroom Requirements u If an exhaust fan is used, it should be located near the tub and water closet area. u Electrical switches should be placed so that they cannot be reached from the tub! u Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) receptacles should be used in the bathroom.

EDT Floor Plan Design- Bathrooms Bathroom Requirements u Accessibility to the bathroom is important. u If there is only one bath for all the bedrooms, locate the door in a hall common to all the bedrooms. u One should not be required to go through another room to reach the bath.

EDT Floor Plan Design- Bathrooms Bathroom Requirements u Bathroom doors are ordinarily not as wide as bedroom doors. u A door that is 2'-6" or even 2'-4" is usually sufficient. u In some instances pocket doors are used to subdivide the bath into two or more areas, as in a two-compartment bath. u Doors should swing into the bathroom and be designed so as not to interfere with the use of any fixture.

EDT Floor Plan Design- Bathrooms Bathroom Requirements u Safety should be a prime consideration when planning the bath. u Flooring materials that become slick when wet should not be used. u Grab bars should be installed around shower stalls, and bathtubs. u Generally, horizontal bars are more preferable than vertical bars.

EDT Floor Plan Design- Bathrooms Bathroom Requirements u Devices should be installed in tub and shower faucets to control water temperature thermostatically to eliminate burns from scalding water. u Also, devices can be installed to control the water pressure so that when the cold water pressure is reduced, the hot water flow is automatically reduced.

EDT Floor Plan Design- Bathrooms Bathroom Requirements u Non-shatter glass should be used in shower and tub enclosures. u Special provisions should be made for any disabled person.

EDT Floor Plan Design- Bathrooms Bathroom Requirements u Economy is partially obtained by the supply and drains being placed on a single wall. u Also, there is no wasted space in this functional bath.
