Kitchens, Laundry Areas and Baths Chapter 22

Objectives 1. Explain basic principles for designing efficient kitchens, laundry areas and bathrooms. 2. Compare options for cabinets, countertops and fixtures. 3. Describe considerations in planning electrical, lighting and ventilation systems for these areas. 4. Identify ways to incorporate universal design features in kitchens, laundry areas and bathrooms. 5. Describe guidelines for shopping for appliances.

Planning Kitchens Which meals will usually be prepared? For how many people will food usually be prepared? Will there be more than one cook? Should the kitchen accommodate people with physical limitations? How many appliances need to be stored?

Designing an Efficient Layout Work centers – an area of a kitchen especially equipped for a particular chore. –Food storage –Cooking center –Clean-up Center –Mixing Center –Planning Center

The Work Triangle The Work Triangle – the triangle formed by drawing an imaginary line to connect the: –Sink –Range –Refrigerator 12 ft.-22 ft. ideally

Kitchen Layout Guidelines Make sure that at least two people could work together in the kitchen. Check clearance spaces for opening appliance and cabinet doors and drawers. Counter space by refrigerator – 18 inches Counter space by cooktop – 21 inches Counter space by sink – 24 inches

Kitchen Layout Guidelines Range should not be under a window. Refrigerator should not be next to the cooktop or oven. Refrigerator door should not open up to a wall.

Common Kitchen Layouts Island – a freestanding storage and countertop unit. Peninsula – a countertop that extends out into a room, with one end attached to a wall or cabinet.

Kitchen Island

Design Activity Evaluating Kitchen Layouts Worksheet

Choosing Cabinets and Fixtures Hardwood Softwood Plastic laminate Metal

Countertops Attractive Durable

Sink Variety of shapes and sizes.

Kitchen Design Considerations Electrical circuits and outlets Lighting Ventilation Flooring Wall covering

Appliance Shopping Performance – consumer reports Energy Use – energy star, rebate Safety Special features Size Style Appearance Price Warranties and repair

Refrigerators & Freezers Special Features: –Automatic ice maker –Ice cube and cold water dispensers –Self-defrosting freezer –Individual compartment controls –Moveable shelves –Glass shelves –Electronic controls – alert –Touch screen and bar code scanner

Ranges, Cooktops & Ovens Gas or Electric? –Many prefer gas for surface cooking and electric heat for oven cooking.

Types of Ovens Conventional – a conventional oven uses gas or electricity to heat the air in the oven compartment. Convection – a convection oven uses fans to circulate heated air over the food.

Appliances Dishwashers –Conserve energy –Run at night if possible – energy rates lower Garbage Disposals

Appliances Washing Machines – –Extra-large capacity –Automatic dispensers –Energy-saving features –Programmable features

Appliances Clothes Dryers –Gas is less expensive than electric –Time and temp controls –Sensor drying –Tumble cycle

Space-Saving Laundry Appliances Stackable washer and dryer Washer-dryer combinations Portable washer and dryer

Planning Laundry Areas Choosing a Location –Hot and cold water supply lines and drains. –240 volt electrical outlet or gas line –Proper ventilation

Planning Laundry Areas Planning for Efficiency –A washable floor covering –Proper lighting –Storage space – detergent and laundry supplies –Space for baskets and bins –Sink –Rod for line drying –Countertop for folding –Ironing board

Design Activity Designing Kitchens and Laundry Areas Worksheet

Bathrooms

Planning Bathrooms Planning the Size and Location –Full bath – sink, toilet and bathtub –Three-quarter bath – sink, toilet, shower and no tub –Half-bath- sink and toilet Master bath – a full bath that is part of the master bedroom area.

Selecting Fixtures and Cabinets Fixtures –Porcelain enamel –China –Stainless steel –Prefabricated plastic

Bathtubs Rectangular Square Round Oval Freestanding/ Pedestal

Showers Tub shower Stall shower

Toilets Ultra low flush – use no more that 1.6 gal. Per flush as compared to older toilets that used as much as 5 gal. Per flush. Some building codes require these.

Bathroom Sinks Wall-hung – has open space beneath. Pedestal – supported by a freestanding base. Inset sink – set into a countertop Above-counter basin – decorative wash bowl. Vanity – a base cabinet in a bathroom. Standard height – 32 inches

Other Considerations Electrical Outlets Lighting Ventilation Floor and wall coverings

Design Activity Master Bath Floor Plan Worksheet
