Mrs. Lewis’ Class School Year

The ABC’S of our classroom : A ttendance- If your child is absent, they must bring a written excuse upon returning to school.

B- Birthdays and Book Orders Birthdays - If you’d like to send in a snack for your child’s birthday, please feel free to do so. We will celebrate birthdays during snack time. There are 21 students in our class. Scholastic book orders will go home every other month. This is a great way to build independent reading. Please fill out the order form and enclose cash or check (made out to Scholastic) in an envelope with your child’s name on it.

C- Classroom rules and consequences Classroom rules- As part of the Capturing Kids Hearts philosophy we will agree to a social contract during the first week of school. This contract will outline expectations within the classroom and school setting. Consequences - – First warning- verbal reminder –Second warning- meet with teacher, name on board (time from recess) –Third warning- meet with teacher, no recess Further warnings will lead to parent notification

C- Conferences and contact info Conferences are scheduled on November 21 st and 22 nd. Please sign up for a conference prior to leaving. Reminders will go home a week before the scheduled conferences. If there is a time when you feel that you’d like an additional conference, we can schedule a meeting anytime during the year. You can also send a note in your son or daughter’s take home

D- Dismissal Dismissal - Written permission (signed and dated) is required each time your child: –Gets off at a different bus stop or rides a different bus home –Will be picked up from school by a parent or another adult –Will walk home or walk home with another student * Without a note you child will be sent home the usual way!

F- Field Trip We have a field trip scheduled to see a performance of Sleeping Beauty at the University of Buffalo. Our other field trip is TBD.

H- Homework Homework will be assigned Monday-Thursday to help reinforce topics that we are learning in school. Please remind your child to check their take-home folder daily.

M- Math The topics that we will cover in math this year include counting, patterning, graphing, addition and subtraction, place value, money, time, problem solving, geometry, fractions and multiplication/division. All second grade students are expected to know math facts up to 20. Benchmark assessments will be given 4 times throughout the year.

P- Parties There will be four classroom parties. Sign-ups are posted on the board. Halloween- Monday, October 31 st Christmas- Wednesday, December 21 st Valentine’s Day- Tuesday, February 14 th Spring- Thursday, April 5 th

Q- Quarterly Progress Report cards will be sent home quarterly. We meet to discuss the first report card at our November conference.

R- Reading Reading - A balanced literacy approach will be an integral part of our reading block. Through the use of Scott Foresman Reading Street as well as other resources will focus on phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Student progress will be monitored through weekly selection tests, fresh reads, and unit benchmarks (5 throughout the year).

R- Reading Partners We plan to continue having parents come in for Reading Partners on a monthly basis. More information will be sent home shortly.

S- Science Science topics will include: –Life cycles –Weather –States of matter –Personal health and safety –Animals –Ecology, energy, and recycling –Plants

S- Social Studies Social Studies topics will include: –Cultural focus- North America –Character Education/Citizenship –Communities –Economics –Holidays –Geography and landforms –Government and citizenship

S- Snack, spelling and supplies Snack - We will have a time for snack each afternoon. You may send in a daily snack for your child or a box to last them the week/month. Spelling - Weekly spelling lists will be sent home for you to practice with you child. Activities throughout the week will focus on the spelling rule. Tests will be given on Friday. Supplies - If you brought some of your child’s classroom supplies, please make sure they are labeled. They may be places inside their cubbies.

T- Take Home Folder Green folders will be used for our take- home folders. Please check it daily for important papers as well as homework. Also, this is a great way for us to communicate as folders will be checked first thing in the morning. Please fill out the paperwork in the green folder and return to me today or as soon as possible.
