12/__/10 Do you think that states should be allowed to restrict smoking? Why or why not?

12/9/10 What are some reasons why people may start smoking? ¿Qué es algunas razones por qué personas fuman cigarrillos?

Why People Start… Stress - The body’s response to a physical or mental demand or pressure. Many young people start using tobacco as a way of coping with stress or uncomfortable feelings. »In your notes list 4 feelings that might cause someone to start smoking.

Social Pressures –With your partner, brainstorm a list of pressures in society that might cause someone to start smoking. List at least 5. –For example; As a Sign of Adulthood

Social Pressures –As a Sign of Adulthood –To be liked by someone they admire –Make them look sophisticated –Look like they are in control of social situations –Imitating an adult role model –Show independence from nonsmoking parents –Peer Pressure

Influences Advertising –In order to gain new customers, tobacco companies target young people in their advertising.

FACTS One out of every four adults aged 18 and over use tobacco products. One out of every five youths under the age of 18 uses tobacco products. Legal Age to Purchase Tobacco? –18 Years Old

Why is tobacco a risk? Tobacco is an addictive drug. An addictive drug is a substance that causes physiological or psychological dependence. Contain nicotine, the addictive drug found in tobacco leaves.

Nicotine Nicotine is a stimulant – a drug that increases the action of the central nervous system, the heart, and other organs. Nicotine raises blood pressure, increases heart rate and contributes to heart disease and stroke. Once addicted, people need more and more tobacco to satisfy their need for nicotine.

Tobacco Smoke is TOXIC Cigarette smoke is a carcinogen. This is a cancer-causing substance. Cigarette Smoke contains; Tar – a thick, sticky, dark fluid produced when tobacco burns. Carbon Monoxide – colorless, odorless, and poisonous gas.

Smokeless Tobacco Smokeless Tobacco is tobacco that is sniffed through the nose, held in the mouth or chewed. Since it is held in the mouth for a long time, it delivers nicotine and carcinogens 2-3 X more than a cigarette. Causes Leukoplakia – thickened, white, leathery-looking spots on the inside of the mouth that can develop into oral cancer.

12/13/10 Why is it so difficult to stop smoking? OR Why don’t people stop when the people closest to them are begging them to stop?

Short Term vs. Long Term What is the difference between a short and long term effect? Explain in your notes. Write down one example of a short term effect of tobacco in your notes. Write down one example of a long term effect of tobacco in your notes.

Tobacco effects the body… Brain - Nicotine causes the release of chemical in the brain that makes tobacco users crave tobacco. Heart - as a result of atherosclerosis, the heart must work harder to pump blood. This extra stress on the heart can lead to high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke. Lungs - smoking blocks the airways, impairs the lungs, and increases the risk of lung cancer and other respiratory diseases. Skin - smoking ages and wrinkles the skin.

Tobacco effects the body… Fingers - long term tobacco use can stain the fingers yellow. Mouth teeth and throat… –Tobacco causes bad breath and decrease the senses of taste and smell. –Causes stains on teeth. It can cause gum disease, mouth, throat, and esophageal cancer. Stomach, colon, and bladder - Tobacco can cause stomach ulcers and bladder, kidney and stomach cancers.

Tobacco effects the body… The airways of the lungs are immediately constricted, causing decreased lung function which hinders physical activity. Nagging coughs and shortness of breath are common. Increased heart rate. Elevated blood pressure.

Tobacco effects the body… Carbon monoxide in the blood deprives body cells of oxygen. Thirty minutes after a cigarette, the brain undergoes nicotine depravation. The body begins to crave additional nicotine. Nicotine withdrawal causes dramatic mental dysfunction.

Other Consequences Costs to society. –Tobacco related illnesses cost the US $165 billion each year! Cost to individuals. –A person smoking one pack a day spends about $1500 a year on that habit. Legal Consequences –Selling to people under 18 is illegal. Using on school property leads to fines.
