2 Why People Start… Stress - The body’s response to a physical or mental demand or pressure. Many young people start using tobacco as a way of coping with stress or uncomfortable feelings. »Depression, Anger, Frustration, Boredom, Anxiety, Nervousness, Shyness

3 FACTS One out of every four adults aged 18 and over use tobacco products. One out of every five youths under the age of 18 uses tobacco products. Legal Age to Purchase Tobacco? –18 Years Old

4 Why is tobacco a risk? Tobacco is an addictive drug. An addictive drug is a substance that causes physiological or psychological dependence. Contain nicotine, the addictive drug found in tobacco leaves.

5 Nicotine Nicotine is a stimulant – a drug the increases the action of the central nervous system, the heart, and other organs. Nicotine raises blood pressure, increases heart rate and contributes to heart disease and stroke. Once addicted people need more and more tobacco to satisfy their need for nicotine.

6 Tobacco Smoke is TOXIC Cigarette smoke is a carcinogen. This is a cancer-causing substance. Cigarette Smoke contains; Tar – a thick, sticky, dark fluid produced when tobacco burns. Carbon Monoxide – colorless, odorless, and poisonous gas.

8 Social Pressures –To be liked by someone they admire –As a Sign of Adulthood –Make them look sophisticated –Look like they are in control of social situations –Imitating an adult role model –Show independence from nonsmoking parents –Peer Pressure Advertising –In order to gain new customers, tobacco companies target young people in their advertising.

9 Smokeless Tobacco Smokeless Tobacco is tobacco that is sniffed through the nose, held in the mouth or chewed. Since it is held in the mouth for a long time, it delivers nicotine and carcinogens 2-3 X more than a cigarette. Causes Leukoplakia – thickened, white, leathery-looking spots on the inside of the mouth that can develop into oral cancer.

10 Short Term Effects Smell of smoke on the breath, hair, and clothes. May make you eyes water and cause coughing. Increase heart rate. Blood Pressure rises.

11 Skin Temperature drops. Stimulates then reduces brain activity. Affects food digestion. Short Term Effects

12 Long Term Effects Coronary Heart Disease –Atherosclerosis is a build up of fatty materials on the artery walls. Lung and Mouth Cancer –Cancer is the abnormal, uncontrolled growth of cells that invade and destroys healthy tissue. –The first sign is often leukoplakia.

13 Chronic Lung Disease –Is long lasting, recurs regularly, and requires repeated or continuous treatment. –Bronchitis is the inflammation of the mucous membrane that lines the air passages, or bronchial tubes. –Emphysema is the when lung tissue is destroyed and air sacs are lost.
