English 2 Do Nows September 2013

9/4 Do Now  Pg. 20  Write a little about your progress with the outside reading requirement. What are some of the things you find challenging about this assignment? What is going well? How did you go about choosing your first book for the semester? What is your current reading routine? We are currently in week 4, which means you have about two weeks to read your 400 pages for triad 1. How close to that number do you think you’ll be in the next two weeks?

9/5 Do Now  Pg. 22  Describe your neighborhood at night? Is it quiet, or loud? Safe or would you avoid walking around at night? What do the houses look like?

9/6 Do Now  Pg. 22  Open journal. School appropriate

9/9 Do Now  Pg. 24  What do you think the world will be like in 40 years (approx 2053 when “The Pedestrian” takes place)? Try to focus on specific part of society such as school, law enforcement, houses, government, transportation, entertainment…

9/10 Do Now  Pg. 24  What does a story need to have for you to enjoy it? Strong characters? A lot of action? Suspense? Write about one of your favorite stories you remember reading last year in English.

9/11 Do Now  Pg. 26  Reflect on today’s date as well as other current events. Do you often think about world events and how they affect your life, or is it just events that happen in “other places”? Explain you thoughts and feelings…

9/12 Do Now  Pg. 26  Open Journal (school appropriate)

9/16 Do Now  Pg. 28  Punctuate this paragraph correctly:  He turned back on a side street circling around toward his home he was within a block of his destination when the lone car turned a corner quite suddenly and flashed a fierce white cone of light upon him he stood entranced not unlike a night moth stunned by the illumination and then drawn toward it

9/17 Do Now  Pg. 28  Write about a story you told within the last 24 hours. Why did you share it? What did it show about you as person?  Story: an account of incidents or events (can be non- fiction or fiction)

9/19 Do Now  Pg. 30  Write about a story someone in your family always tells. It should be a story you’ve heard many, many times.

9/20 Do Now  Pg. 30  Open journaling. (school appropriate)

9/23 Do Now  Pg. 32 Why is it important to think about “the audience” (who reads what we write/say) when we think about how to write? Write about a time you made an “audience” mistake because you didn’t think about WHO you were texting/writing/talking to. If you can think of an experience like this, imagine one you may face in the future (i.e. talking to your boss in the same tone and vocabulary as you do with your best friends). What steps will you take in your education to learn more about this idea of “audience” when it comes to your writing? Examples include all the elements of writing (on the black poster).

9/24  Pg. 32  What kind of career would you like to have? What kind of writing do you think you’ll have to do in this line of work?

9/26 Do Now  Pg. 34  sdirection.html sdirection.html  Write your impressions? What was he talking about? How good is your attention?

9/27 Do Now  Pg. 34  Open Journaling, school appropriate.

9/30 Do Now  Pg _storm_chaser.html What do you think of Camille’s story? How do the pictures make you feel?
