Migration TASK 1: Write the title ‘Migration’. Copy this sentence: Migration is when people move permanently from one place to another. It can be within the same country (internal) or across national boundaries (international) TASK 2: Write out the following sentences. Besides each, write either: Not migration Internal migration International migration 1.The Khan family flee the war in Afghanistan. They move to live in neighbouring Pakistan. 2.Mr and Mrs Jones move from Bristol city centre to live in semi-rural Long Ashton. 3.When Slovakia joined the EU in 2004, Filip Elijas moved to the UK to get a better job. 4.Mr and Mrs Brook always take their children to Devon for the summer holidays.

RefugeeA person who has left their home in a country where they feel unsafe because of persecution or war, and has applied to stay in another country where they feel safe. If they are allowed to stay they become a refugee. Asylum SeekerA person who has a right to work and live in a country for a short time. Economic migrant A person who has been forced to leave their country because it is not safe for them to stay because of persecution or war, and who has been granted permission to stay in a country where they feel safe. Seasonal worker A person who has left their country to make their quality of life better. TASK 3: Write these definitions out in the correct order:

Why do people move? TASK 5: Write a sub-heading ‘Why do People Move?’ Make a list of all of the reasons that might make people migrate. Should Ammani leave Kolar Gold Fields? Ammani is a confident and intelligent 22-year-old who lives in Kolar Gold Fields, in southern India. She is trying to decide whether or not she will move to the UK to study IT. Right now Ammani lives with her father, who used to work in the gold mines. Ammani's brother and his four children also live in Kolar Gold Fields. However, only 12 families now live in Kolar Gold Fields - it used to be a busy and prosperous mining town with over 5000 people, but now the mines have closed and unemployment is high. Ammani's best friend, Sita, has already moved to the UK and has been studying business management in Manchester.

1.I worry about my father because he has a lung condition. 2.I love Bollywood films but the cinema closed down three years ago. 3.My auntie lives in London so I already have family in the UK 4.I could move to Bangalore instead. It’s only 100km away from Kolar Gold Fields and is the centre of the Indian computer industry. 5.Many families from Kolar Gold Fields have migrated to the UK or the US since the mines closed down. 6.My boyfriend lives I nearby Kolar and I would miss him if I went to the UK. 7.I’ve been working in a clothes shop in Kolar since I finished college and my manager wants to promote me. 8.I’ve spent my whole life in Kolar Fields and have never travelled abroad. 9.I volunteer at a local orphanage in Kolar and the children would miss me if I left. 10.I need a further qualification to get the job I’d like in IT. Which are push and which are pull factors? What should she do?

What stops people from moving? TASK 7: The following pictures all represent things that stop people from migrating. Write a new sub-heading ‘Barriers to Migration’ and see if you can guess what they all are. EXTENSION: Think of some other barriers to migration.

Where are you from? TASK 8: Cities like Bristol often contain many migrants. People are attracted to cities for many of the reasons we’ve outlined today. Your final task is either: i)Tell us the story of your migration (why did you move, what were the barriers, how are things now? ii)Tell us the story of the migration of someone that you know (why did they move, what were the barriers, how are things now? This activity could be levelled, so please include some detail. SUGGESTION. I need some video clips about migration for the GCSE Take 5 website. We could do this during next lesson if enough people are interested?
