1 Welcome To Britain Refugee Week Assembly

2 This helps to remind us that we should care about everyone in our community and think about what their lives were like before they came to be our friends. Every year in June in Britain, since 1998, we spend a week thinking about people who have to leave their homes and everything they know, to try and find safety in another country.

4 What would you miss if you had to leave your home? What makes you feel safe?

5 Britain has welcomed refugees for hundreds of years 1500s – 100,000 French people fled to Britain to escape religious persecution. 1930s – 20,000 Jewish people escaped from Nazi persecution in Germany.

6 Britain has welcomed refugees for hundreds of years 1950s – 21,000 Hungarian people came seeking refuge from Russian communism. 1970s – 27,000 Indian people were forced to leave their homes in Uganda by the new president. Today – Many Syrians are fleeing civil war and seeking safety

7 How might you feel if you had to leave your home and everything you know and live in a different country, just to feel safe? Lost Afraid Lonely Homesick What problems might you face in your new home? Not understanding a new language Finding a home People being unkind Being bullied

8 Refer back to the video clips and children’s comments? Prejudice – Being thought of in a negative way. Stereotyping – Thinking that all refugees are the same. Discrimination – Being treated differently, often in a negative way. What are some of the issues faced by refugees living in Britain today?

9 Brighton – A City of Sanctuary Brighton is now a City of Sanctuary offering a home for refugees whose lives have been devastated by war or persecution. Sanctuary A place offering safety away from danger

10 How can we make Refugees feel welcome and included in our community?

11 Welcoming Britain and Brighton can help refugees feel welcome by: Providing homes Helping people find schools and jobs Helping people to understand and speak English You can help a refugee friend feel welcome by: Smiling Being friendly Becoming a buddy and helping children find their way around the school. Learning to say “hello” in a different language. Finding out about the country your new friend has come from.
