Infectious Diseases

What Does Infectious Mean?  Infectious or Communicable Disease  Spread from one living thing to another or through the environment.  Pathogen  Causes a disease  Virus, Bacteria  Fungi, Protozoan, Parasites

Differences?  Contagious Disease is spread from person to person  Not ALL infectious diseases are contagious!!

Virus  Small genetic material surrounded by coating.  May prevent with vaccine  Weakened pathogen to stimulate immune system  Examples:  Influenza (flu)  Common Cold  AIDS  Smallpox Bacteria  Single-celled organism  Cure with antibiotics  Kills or slows growth of bacteria  Examples:  Strep Throat  Tuberculosis  Lyme Disease  Bacterial Pinkeye

FungiProtozoanParasites Plantlike organisms Mold/Yeast Examples include Athlete’s Foot Single-Celled organisms larger than bacteria Usually from water Amebic Dysentery is an example. Organism that lives off of host Tapeworm or Malaria are examples.

Transmission  Direct Contact  Touching, Sneezing/Coughing, Sharing  Person, Animal, Insect  Indirect Contact  Objects

Common Viral Infections  Common Cold  Inflammation (irritation) of nose and throat  Symptoms: runny/stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat, headache  Influenza (Flu)  Respiratory System (lungs)  Symptoms: high fever, chills, dry cough, joint/muscle pain, extreme fatigue

Common Bacterial Infections  Strep Throat  Sore throat, fever, enlarged lymph nodes in neck  Tuberculosis  Respiratory System (lungs)  Cough, fever, sweats  Treatment requires 5 antibiotics  Sinus Infections  Congestion, runny nose  Usually not contagious

Critical Question  You wake up one morning with a headache, body aches, and a fever. You think you might be coming down with something. Analyze the relationship between healthful behaviors you can practice and the ways that infectious diseases are spread. What should you do? (7 sentences)

Tips to Avoid Diseases  Wash hands  Don’t share food/objects  Cover skin to avoid parasites  Eat balanced diet  Prepare food safely  Manage stress  Avoid sick people

Disease Project!!!!! 1.Botulism 2.Cholera 3.Diphtheria 4.Hansen’s Disease (Leprosy) 5.Whooping Cough (Pertussis) 6.Pinkeye (Contagious Conjunctivitis) 7.Plague 8.Scarlet Fever 9.Tetanus 10.Typhoid Fever 11.Chickenpox 12.Measles (Rubeola) 13.Mumps 14.Polio (Poliomyelitis) 15.Rabies 16.Rubella (German Measles) 17.Athlete’s Foot 18.Ringworm 19.Thrush (Oropharyngeal Candidiasis) 20.Amebic Dysentery (Amebiasis) 21.Giardiasis 22.Malaria 23.Sleeping Sickness (African Trypanosomiasis) 24.Lyme Disease 25.Meningitis 26.Yellow Fever 27.Hepatitis A 28.Pneumonia 29.Tuberculosis 30.Smallpox 31.Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever 32.Typhus
