Fitness Vocabulary

Physical Fitness: / A state in which the body can handle the demands placed on it - both muscular + cardiovascular.

F.I.T.T Principle: Frequency, Intensity, Time, & Type / Frequency - how often you do the exercise. / Intensity - how hard/how much effort you put into the exercise. / Time - how much time you spend exercising. / Type - what type of exercise are you doing. / Frequency - how often you do the exercise. / Intensity - how hard/how much effort you put into the exercise. / Time - how much time you spend exercising. / Type - what type of exercise are you doing.

Cardiovascular Endurance: / The effectiveness of your heart and lungs working together to provide your body with a sufficient amount of oxygen during continuous exercise over a period of time.

Muscular Endurance: / The ability of your muscles to exert a force over time without becoming overly tired.

Strength: / The most weight you can lift or the most force you can exert at one time is a measure of strength.

Flexibility: / Your ability to move within the range of motion for each joint.

Body Composition: / The proportion of body fat in comparison to lean body tissue such as muscle & bone.

BMR: Basal Metabolic Rate / The rate at which you use energy when completely at rest, this varies according to age, gender, weight, body size & shape.

Aerobic: / Vigorous, rhythmic physical activity that aids the heart and increases the body’s capacity to take in and use oxygen (exercise with oxygen).

Anaerobic: / Intense physical activity that lasts a short time and involves great bursts of energy in which the muscles work hard to produce energy (exercise without oxygen).

Heart Rate: / How many times your heart beats in a minute - fast or slow.
