What is Twitter? Twitter is a social networking and micro-blogging service that allows users to send and read other user’s messages, called tweets. Tweets can be up to 140 characters long, and often contain links directing users to external websites of interest. A public SMS service

The Stats: Users Worldwide There are more than 106 million accounts on Twitter The number of Twitter users increases by 300,000 every day 20% of users have tweeted 10 times or more 41% of users have not tweeted since they created an account (observers) 97% of users have less than 100 followers

The Stats: Users in Australia Twitter’s audience levels grew by more than 400% in 2009 and nearly one quarter of online Australians (23%) have read tweets in the past year 14%followed companies or organisations via Twitter (up from 5% in 2008) 13% posted tweets (up from 4% in 2008) There are approximately 2.5 million Twitter accounts in Australia Only 16% of Twitter users are aged under 24 years old

Twitter Karma: be a good Twitizen Follow users of interest and consider following everyone who follows you Reply to all of your direct messages (DMs) and mentions where possible Re-tweet content posted by other users that is of interest to your and your followers Mention anyone you are sharing content from or specifically tweeting about

4. Plan and structure your tweets Plan your twitter communications Tag tweets with a commonly used or patterned phrasing Demographics of the twitterverse should be considered when designing tweets Limit your daily tweets
