The Art Of Winning: DELIBERATE customized practice BY FRANK GIAMPAOLO

What is Mental toughness?  The 3 tiers of match strategy  Assembling game plans  Strategies versus the 4 main playing styles  Customizing the Top 7 Patterns  Positioning to maximize success  Opponent awareness (Style of play, strengths and weaknesses, Top 7 Pattern and frustration tolerance levels)  Shot selection (Hitting the shot the moment demands) The mental components relate to the analytical match decisions

What is emotional toughness ? The emotional components relate to the athlete’s ability to handle competitive anxiety  Controlling anger/ fear/nervousness  Staying unflappable under adversity  Closing out a set/match/tournament  Concentrating for the duration  Playing at peak performance vs weaker players  Overcoming choking or panicking  Successfully handling hardships (Injuries, the elements, bad luck, gamesmanship or an aggravating opposing playing style)

Do Pros run their top 7 patterns ? Rafael Nadal ran the same old boring winning service pattern on the ad side 89% of the time Vs Ryan Harrison. Result- rafa won routinely while conserving energy for future rounds.

Devising/practicing counter tactics “In any sport, experts don’t simply see where the action is… they can see where the action is going to be in the very near future”

Benefits of counter tactics  Controlling the Tipping points  gaining the critical mental/ emotional edge in tiebreakers  shutting down the opponents preferred play- forces the opponent to shift to their less comfortable B or C patterns at crunch time  Remaining one step ahead of their opposition  Performing with increased confidence because they have a plan  Intimidating the opponent by out- thinking them (staying on top of their preferred patterns)

Recognizing Opponents Top 7 Patterns 1.Favorite deuce side service pattern 2.Favorite Advantage side service pattern 3.Favorite position/shot selection vs a strong first serve 4.Favorite position/shot selection vs a weaker second serve 5.Favorite rally pattern to get the opponent vulnerable 6.Favorite short ball option 7.Favorite net rushing option

“Spectacular performances begin with spectacular preparation” Deliberate Customized Practice  customize each students individual top 7 patterns  rehearse their top 7 patterns  Learn to identify counter opponents top 7 patterns
