4 WHAT IS MEANT BY MONITORING AND EVALUATING?

5 Monitoring Monitoring is basically you “checking up” on what you are doing.

6 Monitoring When designing a development programme for any of the 4 factors (mental, emotional, social or physical) it is important to consider how you will monitor your progress through the programme. When we monitor something we are basically watching over it to make sure that it runs smoothly. Therefore monitoring a training programme is done to ensure that the programme is going according to plan.

7 Evaluating Evaluating your performance development programme is when you directly compare your performance at the start with where your performance level is at the end of your programme. To evaluate the impact a development programme has had on your performance you need to make judgements based on the information gathered at the end of your programme. Analysing this information will identify if improvements have been made and should allow you to identify future development needs

8 Why Monitor & Evaluate? Copy the bubble onto a piece of paper. You have 4 minutes to come up with as many reasons for monitoring as possible. Ensure your programme is being effective and achieving the desired outcome.

9 Why Monitor & Evaluate? Identify if the programme is not being effective allowing you to make changes to the programme. Track your progress. This can lead to an increase in motivation if you see that that progress has been made. This will also lead to an increase in confidence. Identify if adjustments are required to ensure that the performer is being challenged. This will ensure continued progress is made. Check if you are meeting your goals. This will provide motivation to the performer if goals are being met. This will also promotes awareness of accomplishment- can increase confidence Set new challenging goals in order to maintain motivation and ensure further progress is made Identify areas you need to improve on in the future. This can inform the next stages in the performer development as well as changes that may be required to your programme. Identify approaches to performance development that work for you. This will ensure you use these approaches again in the future if appropriate

14 Advantages of a Training Diary After each session you can record your thoughts and feelings on the session and your progress. It provides a permanent record of your thoughts and feeling so you can look back and reflect on your progress at any stage. All monitoring data can be recorded in one organized place. Feedback Progress against goals Being able to look back at the progress you have made will increase motivation and confidence. Information recorded in your diary will help to ensure that each session takes account of your thoughts and feelings about the last sessions. This will help to ensure changes are being made when needed. Information on what the performer has found helps them to be successful can be recorded. This ensures this can be reinforced, remembered and used again in the future.

15 Disadvantages of a Training Diary Can take time away from practice session in order to complete the diary You might not place a high enough value on it and rush comments therefore making the data collected less valid and reliable. If done later your recollection of the information might not be correct as it is not fresh in your mind You might lose or forget your diary as it is not of high enough importance to you. You might not recognise the progress you are making – therefore record overly negative comments. You might not have the experience or knowledge to make valuable comments in your training diary.

16 Redoing Initial Methods of Gathering Data

17 Redoing methods You used to gather initial data When gathering initial data you collect baseline data on your performance using different methods of data collection (GOS, FOS, Questionnaires, Self Reflection tools). To check if you have improved you would simply select which method you want to redo and do this again in the middle and at the end of your training programme and compare the results This approach will give you qualitative or quantitative data on your progress depending on the method you use to gather the data.

21 Making sure a comparison is reliable and valid When redoing your initial methods of gathering data the same issues that affect the validity & reliability of the data should be considered. In addition it is important that the conditions replicate as closely as possible those that were present when you gathered the initial data.

24 Monitoring & Evaluating Your Programme As part of your development programme you will monitor, record and evaluate your progress. To do this you will: Keep a training diary over the 6 week programme. Redo initial methods of gathering data. This will be done at the middle and end of your programme.

25 Unit Assessment 2.2 To complete this unit assessment you must: Provide 2 reasons for using a training diary to record your performance development. Provide 2 different reasons for redoing initial methods of gathering data to monitor your performance development

27 Setting Goals A simple way to check for improvement is to set yourself targets and check if you are meeting them. For Example My goal in the repetition drill is to get 7 out 10 drop shots between the net and the service line My goal in a game at the end might be to score at least 4 points where I used my overhead clear to set myself up for a point winning drop shot or smash

28 Verbal Feedback During a training session or after a game you could ask for feedback on how well you performed in relation to your weakness. This is simply when someone tells you about the thinks you did well and the thinks that you still need to work on. You could get this information from a Coach Teacher Partner Opponent

29 Performance Against Other To get information about if your performance is improving you could simply play a game against an opponent and record the scores. This will allow you to see if your training is helping you to get better or not depending on if there is a change in the results
