1 Factor: Physical (Skills)
Sub Factor: Skill Repertoire

2 Learning Outcomes How we collected initial information on our skill repertoire in badminton. The positive and negative impact of skill repertoire on your performance.

3 What is Skill Repertoire?
“The range of skills you have at your disposal during a badminton match which can be best utilised in a variety of performance situations” What are the main skills in badminton? High Serve Overhead Clear Smash Drop Shot Net Shot Block

4 Collecting Initial Information on Skill Repertoire
What approach did we use? Stroke Repertoire Observation Schedule (SROS) Skills Effective Fairly Effective Ineffective High Serve Low Serve Overhead Clear Smash Drop Shot Net Shot Block

5 Stroke Repertoire Observation Schedule
What was the process? 2 sets to 21 points against an opponent of equal ability. An observer collected information on your performance using the SROS. The SROS lists the various shots you could play in a badminton match. Each time you played one of these shots the observer marked it on the sheet. They marked down whether it was effective, fairly effective or ineffective.

6 The written format provides a permanent record that allows for comparison at a later date.
What are the benefits of using a Stroke Repertoire Observation Schedule?

7 The benefits of using a SROS
The written format provides a permanent record that allows for comparison at a later date. Having an observer it provides objective feedback which is non-bias providing more accurate results. By playing in a competitive match against someone of equal ability you are forced to play your full range of shots adding to the validity of the findings. By completing the schedule over a sustained period of time (21 Points, 2 sets) patterns of play can be observed. It is also possible to see dips in form. The more information gives you a more detailed picture of performance. Occasionally, a player takes longer to get into the match. This duration provides them the opportunity to do this. All tally marks can be converted into statistics which are hard to argue with. Strengths and weaknesses can be identified from the schedule which future performance development programmes and goal setting can be based upon.

8 When you have someone else recording information on performance the validity of the results are dependent on the observers focus and attention during the match and the importance they place on the process. What are the limitations of using a Stroke Repertoire Observation Schedule?

9 The limitations of using a SROS
When you have someone else recording information on performance the validity of the results are dependent on the observers focus and attention during the match and the importance they place on the process. Also, if they are lacking activity knowledge their perception of what equals an effective shot might be different from the reality. Badminton is a very fast paced sport and there is likely to be a number of shots in every rally. This can make it impossible for one observer to record all shots played. When they take their eye of the match to complete the schedule shots are missed questioning the reliability of the findings. If the opposition is not of a similar ability this will provide false results and a performer might not be forced to play their full range of shots if insufficient pressure is applied. The mental and emotional state of the performer is crucial if accurate results are to be collected. Lack of motivation, resilience, and anxiety etc will impact the quality of shots, decisions, concentration and technique. If a performer is over tired, hungry etc this will impact their play and ultimately the results.

10 Watch this badminton match
Watch this badminton match. Lin Dan (China) V’s Lee Chong Wei (Malaysia) How does a wide skill repertoire positively impact their performance? Note reasons in your jotter as you watch the match. Reason 1: They can dictate and control the game.

11 Positive Impact of skill Repertoire
Ability to apply the right shot at the right time Potential to select a number of shots from any one point on court Able to carry height, angle and speed to expose space at the corners of court Dictate and control game Faster decision making (Bank of knowledge) faster motor response Accuracy and consistency. Quality preparation allows for economic and graceful movements

12 Negative Impact of limited Skill Repertoire
Creativity, tactical and decision making potential massively reduced Limited options prevents you creating space Predictable Lack of timing, accuracy and technique reduces amount of movement required by opponent Constantly defending Unable to change tempo impact concentration, motivation and coping with pressure

13 The Overhead Clear The Overhead clear has a high and deep trajectory. It is executed at the rear of your court and lands in the tramlines of your opponents court.

14 What is the impact of having a powerful and accurate overhead clear?
The overhead clear moves your opponent to the backcourt. Therefore, it will create space in the frontcourt for you to exploit. It will prevent your opponent from building a strong attack as they will have to play a defensive shot What is the impact of having a powerful and accurate overhead clear? It will also give you more time to go back to your base and prepare for your opponents return. It allows less time for your opponent to get behind the shuttle, potentially causing weak returns which you can exploit.

15 Evaluate the impact of having a smash which has power and accuracy

16 What is the impact of having a powerful and accurate smash?
The power and downwards angle of the smash gives my opponent less time to react. Making it difficult for them to return. I have the ability to change the pace of my smash and place it to different areas of the court, which wrong foots my opponent and makes it difficult for them to return What is the impact of having a powerful and accurate smash? If my opponent does return my smash its usually with a lift shot as opposed to a block, which allows me to hit another attacking shot.
