‘Success for Aboriginal People in the Workplace’ Cherie Sibosado Noongar Kadadjiny Kulark Kart Aboriginal Support Service Central Institute of Technology

Introduction Central Institute of Technology From its early beginnings in 1900, Central has grown to include five campuses – Perth, East Perth, Mount Lawley, Leederville and Nedlands, offers a choice of over 400 nationally accredited courses across eight study areas from Certificates to Advanced Diploma's; and is now regarded as one the largest Vocational Education and Training (VET) colleges in Australia. Central offers a variety of courses designed to respond to the need for an adaptable and highly skilled workforce; and over the years, has developed strong connections with industry and business, ensuring that our courses remain relevant and responsive to existing and emerging industry requirements.

Introduction Noongar Kadadjiny Kulark Kart Is the Aboriginal Support Service at Central Institute of Technology that offers Indigenous Students a range of assistance to support each of them during their time at Central, such as: Exploring and planning further studies/career pathways General mentoring and support Accessing additional Support Services Access to facilities and resources Strengthening support and community networks

Case Study 1: Overview ‘Getting on the Same Page’ Educators & Students The Centre for Business Solutions and Training (CBS Training) is the corporate training section of the Business and Management Portfolio at Central and has been providing highly successful customised training solutions and public courses to the community since CBS Training offers comprehensive training products including customised and public courses, Traineeships, Work-based Training, and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). CBS Training was contracted by Dept. of Corrective Services to deliver customised professional development training to Indigenous staff members of the Dept.

Cultural Awareness Training EducatorsStudents Cultural Awareness Training 2 Step Learning Cycle A successful Learning Cycle begins with a solid learning foundation. The first step concentrates on strengthening the cultural knowledge and teaching capacity of Educators. The second step concentrates on being more responsive to the learning needs of Students to nurture their holistic learning development and environment. Active Learning starts with Effective Teaching

Case Study 2 Overview Fast Track Program: Women In Mining The Chamber of Minerals & Energy of Western Australia (CME) is the peak resources sector representative body in WA The role of CME is to champion the WA resources sector and is a persuasive industry voice, adding value to their member companies in a dynamic and increasingly complex operating environment. The development of the Fast Track Program is a result of CME recognising the need to address the under representation of Indigenous women in the Mining & Resources sector. CME in partnership with Rio Tinto and MacMahon will trial the Fast Track Program commencing January 2012, as a 24 months Pilot Program with 15 placements on offer.
