5 Background: Research for all
Respondents Almost 2000 responses 60 specialties 59% male/41% female 62% consultants 90% from England The Royal College of Physicians wanted to find out why more clinicians were not getting involved in research within the NHS so asked almost 2000 doctors what they saw as barriers.

6 Time and funding are the biggest barriers to doctors doing more research
Time and Funding were the biggest barriers but as you can see from this list, issues such as ethics approval, recruiting and skills were all contributing factors.

7 Summary of recommendations
Protected time Signposting funding opportunities Champion the research culture Mentoring Funding is essential for the UK to continue to be world leading in medical research. Smaller amounts of funding should be available to support smaller projects such as quality improvement or to help those who have not previously been involved in research to begin on a local level. Trusts should ensure that researchers have protected time for research as it was found to be a major deterrent and inhibitor of doctors becoming more involved in research. Employment policies should support collaboration and movement between the NHS, universities and industry, collaboration is important and contracts should not disincentives this. Investment and support for R&D departments to be able to in turn champion the research culture and attract new researchers. Recognition by the hospital board and colleagues in research of the key role that R&D departments have in facilitating a positive research culture and managing capacity is important to ensure that everyone in is working as one team. Enable greater access to research skills and mentoring at all career stages. Doctors should be pro active and ensure that they are at minimum aware of the pertinent research in their specialty or be able to recruit patients to on-going trials, supporting colleagues who are researching and ensuring that their hospital is research active.

8 R&D departments NEW R&D Forum Resources Portal www.rdforum.org.uk
There are many varied roles within an R&D department which can provide help and support to address barriers to research for doctors. The roles and responsibilities have evolved from a focus on governance (which remains important) to a need to engage both strategically and proactively to champion research. Research can only be embedded in the NHS if the team works together. This functions wheel aims to reflect roles, functions but also purpose. It is important to communicate the ‘why’. The R&D Forum is building an improved knowledge and resources exchange to reflect all these roles in the Functions wheel. It will be launched in October please contribute resources, useful links and case studies. You can download a JPEG of the wheel here NEW R&D Forum Resources Portal

9 Sharing good practice Research strategy Patient involvement
Communication Relationship building Professional development Contribution of doctors Signposting Financial Management Infrastructure To take forward recommendations in Research for all, the RCP, the NHS R&D Forum and the NIHR Ashridge R&D leaders and managers collaborated on ‘Research for all: Sharing good practice in research management’, which sought to identify and share good practice. Several key themes emerged: The need for a research strategy to underpin a positive research culture Mobilising the patient voice to promote and contribute to research Celebrating success and communicating clearly and effectively Building relationships across the team, between doctors, patients, CEOs research managers, nurses etc. Each has their own expertise to bring to the table. Encouraging a positive attitude towards learning about the way research is handled amongst doctors and encouraging them to support their colleagues. Signposting the roles of each member of the team to improve guidance and workflow Ensuring there are mechanisms in place for good financial management, as portfolios grow, this becomes ever more essential Working together to ensure that local infrastructure needs are identified and institutional support is secured – this can be an IT infrastructure or awarding PAs for research Supporting professional development – for everyone! Keep contributing

10 Case Studies Insert individual case studies for discussion from ‘Research for all: sharing good practice in research management’ Research for all: sharing good practice in research management contains over 50 case studies from all sizes of organisation.
