UNIT 20 TALENT ID & DEVELOPMENT IN SPORT Tennis & Further Education Taught Lesson Supporting Presentation UNIT 20 TALENT ID & DEVELOPMENT IN SPORT Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Extended National Diploma in Sport (Development, Coaching & Fitness)

This Unit will provide learners with an under- Aim & Purpose This Unit will provide learners with an under- standing of the different predicators of talent and the different ways of developing talent. Learning Outcomes: 1 Know the key predicators of talent for performers in sport 2 Be able to design a talent identification programme for a chosen sport 3 Know key factors in talent development in sport 5 Be able to design a talent development programme for a chosen sport

What is Talent Identification in Sport? Student Task What is Talent Identification in Sport? Tutor Guidance: The tutor may wish to divide the student group into two small groups and give them five minutes to come up with a definition and a few examples of what they think Talent Identification in Sport is.

Peltola. E (1992) Thomson, R. W; Beavis (1985) Definition "that process by which children are encouraged to participate in the sports at which they are most likely to succeed, based on results of testing selected parameters. These parameters are designed to predict performance capacity, taking into account the child's current level of fitness and maturity. Peltola. E (1992) Thomson, R. W; Beavis (1985) Tutor Guidance: The tutor may wish to consider the responses of the student group, possibly following some form of collation of ideas and link them with this academic definition of Talent Identification and/or offer some context to the definition.

Physical Physiological Sociological Psychological Skills Predicators of Talent Physical Physiological Sociological Psychological Skills Tutor Guidance: Prior to showing the predicators of talent the tutor may wish to task the students with identifying what these are and possibly why? Many of these will have been or will be discussed in a number of the other units within the BTEC suite of units and the tutor may wish to refer to these or indeed utilise this prior knowledge in developing further knowledge and understanding.

Height Weight Muscle Girth Somatotype Physical Tutor Guidance: The tutor may wish to identify the sports that the student group participate in and discuss the physical predicators in achieving excellence within their particular sport. Further discussion on these could be supported through visual examples of elite tennis performers which can be found at www.tennisfoundation.org or various other sports at www.youtube.co.uk

Height Basketball, Tennis, Volleyball, Rowing Examples of Physical Predicators Height Basketball, Tennis, Volleyball, Rowing 7ft 11” Tutor Guidance: The tutor may wish to conduct a practical investigation of the benefits of height to these particular sports which would develop knowledge and understanding of the physiological factors of talent identification. 3ft

What are the benefits of height to Basketball Rowing? Student Task What are the benefits of height to Basketball Rowing? 10ft Tutor Guidance: The tutor may wish to task the student group individually or in small groups to identify the significance of height to these sports? Further investigation of these sports and the talent identification process can be conducted through research in to the ‘Sporting Giants’ programme delivered by UK Sport. Stroke Length

Aerobic Endurance Anaerobic Power Strength Speed Physiological Tutor Guidance: These predicators to talent link to a number of BTEC units and may have already been explored by the student. The tutor may wish to consider the impact on performance and task the students with a practical investigation into each factor, an example of this would be participation in a game of tennis followed by an observation of a top level game of tennis, examples of which can be found at www.tennisfoundation.org.uk

Practice Opportunities Sociological Parental Support Practice Opportunities Education Available Funding National Governing Body Provision Tutor Guidance: The tutor may wish to visit http://www.lta.org.uk/players-parents/ as part of an in-class research activity into the sociological predicators to talent in tennis. This section of the Lawn Tennis Associations, (LTA), websites provides various support mechanisms, hints and tips to playing tennis, all of which are covered in the above headings. The tutor may also wish to use the ‘Winning Player Pathway’ model to talk through the development of talent within tennis. The model can be found at http://www.lta.org.uk/InYourArea/Norfolk/Resources/Players/Winning%20Player%20Pathway.pdf

Confidence Concentration Anticipation Decision-Making Psychological Confidence Concentration Anticipation Decision-Making Game Intelligence Tutor Guidance: These talent predicators link with the knowledge and understanding delivered within unit 17 Psychology for Sports Performance, the tutor may wish to build on this knowledge through observation of an elite tennis match and task the students with identifying key traits demonstrated from each of the psychological consideration highlighted within the taught lesson delivery.

General Motor Skills Technical Skills Tactical Skills Skills Tutor Guidance: The tutor may wish to define skill or task the students with defining skill prior to discussing the various types of skill.

Gross Motor Skills – Large Muscle Groups Skill Classification Gross Motor Skills – Large Muscle Groups Fine Motor Skills – Intricate detailed movement Open Skills – Changing environment / Team Sports Closed skills – Stable environment / Target Sport / Isolated Skill Tutor Guidance: The tutor may wish to consider the link between this unit, Psychology for Sports Performance, (Unit 17), Practical Individual Sports, (Unit 9) and Technical & Tactical Skills in Sport, (Unit 27) when delivering this underpinning knowledge. Skill Classification and application are covered in all of these units as well as one or two more from the BTEC suite and will help to reinforce the key points. The tutor may wish to classify skills within a practical environment in order to promote knowledge and understanding of the skill through practical investigation. Sports such as Tennis, Basketball, Volleyball and athletic disciplines offer a variety of opportunities to explore each of the skills.

Internal Paced Skill – Intrinsic Control Skill Classification Cont’d Internal Paced Skill – Intrinsic Control External Paced Skill – Opponent Control Discreet Skill – Clear Beginning & End Serial Skill – The linking of skills to form a complex movement Continuous Skill – No clear start or end Tutor Guidance: The tutor may wish to continue to encourage the students to explore the above skills through practical investigation or visual learning through the use of YouTube.

· Anthropometrical data Predicators within Tennis · Anthropometrical data · Motor abilities, (coordination, agility, footwork, speed, power). · Psychological features/characteristics, (mostly of permanent type, e.g. temperament, achievement motivation, intelligence). · Technical-tactical skills. · Progress/Trainability/Coachability. · Performance (not only results) in tournaments. Tutor Guidance:

•High level motor skills: -speed -agility -coordination ITF Predicators •High level motor skills: -speed -agility -coordination •Tactical skills and game instincts •Technical potential •Mental features including: -determination -competitiveness -focus (task application) Tutor Guidance: Many of these talent predicators identified by the International Tennis Federation will have been explored in other units from the BTEC suite of units. The tutor may wish to task the students with defining the components of fitness, (speed, agility & coordination), and describing where they are used within a Tennis match, the same task could be completed for determination, competitiveness & focus. The above predicators could be used to form a ‘checklist’ which could be take in to Unit 9 / Practical Individual Sport and used to assess the level of ability within Tennis.
