3 Children learn… By being motivated. By being successful. By copying others. By being encouraged. More rapidly than adults. Children are more confident and willing to make mistakes than adults.

4 To ensure that children learn, the following stages must be carried out: 1. Understanding The child must know and understand what he/she is trying to achieve. Therefore a sports coach must be able to explain what is required. 2. Practicing Purposeful practice is essential. A sports coach must be able to create and offer opportunities for children to practice their skills and abilities.

5 3. Feedback Reinforces progress or alters technique. A sports coach must be able to give continuous feedback. 4. Performing The skill becomes almost automatic; the child will know and be able to concentrate on what to do, how to do it and when to do it.

7 Once a child is performing a skill, a cycle of Plan, Perform and Evaluate stimulates further progress. The role of a Sports coach is to offer appropriate interventions at each of the learning stages if the child is to have fun, succeed, progress and stay motivated. The learning cycle
