1 PE KS1 & 2 The rolling programme is constructed using the QCA units of study to ensure content delivery and progression. Please refer to the planning formats for information of how these units will be adapted by teachers to develop medium term plans. Although the expectations are taken from QCA units the planning may differ to ensure it is differentiated appropriately to meet the needs of the children at Maplefields School The rolling programme is split into two cycles to accommodate the specific class groupings in the primary phase. This will ensure that children will have access to the full programme as they move through the school even if they remain in the same class for more than one year. Aims and purposes of PE a Ongoing skills development Children build on their natural enthusiasm for movement, using it to explore and learn about their world. They start to play and work with other children in pairs and small groups. By watching, listening and experimenting with movement and ideas, they develop their skills in movement and their coordination, and enjoy expressing and testing themselves in a variety of situations. a Children enjoy being active and using their creativity and imagination in physical activity. They learn new skills, find out how to use them in different ways, and link them to make actions, phrases and sequences of movement. They enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other. They develop an understanding of how to succeed in different activities and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success Focused Curriculum Days PE offers opportunities for children to: become skilful and intelligent performers; acquire and develop skills, performing with increasing physical competence and confidence, in a range of physical activities and contexts; learn how to select and apply skills, tactics and compositional ideas to suit activities that need different approaches and ways of thinking; develop their ideas in a creative way; set targets for themselves and compete against others, individually and as team members; understand what it takes to persevere, succeed and acknowledge others' success; respond to a variety of challenges in a range of physical contexts and environments; take the initiative, lead activity and focus on improving aspects of their own performance; discover their own aptitudes and preferences for different activities; make informed decisions about the importance of exercise in their lives; develop positive attitudes to participation in physical activity.

4 a PE KS3 a Designated Project Days These are units that will be planned by class teachers for designated project days (on class timetables). Each class will undertake one project unit during the Autumn, Spring and Summer. The programme is constructed using the QCA units of study to ensure content delivery and progression. Please refer to the planning formats for information of how these units will be adapted by teachers to develop medium term plans. Although the expectations are taken from QCA units the planning may differ to ensure it is differentiated appropriately to meet the needs of the children at Maplefields School There is one unit planned per term but teachers may choose to extend or shorten the number of weeks on each unit which will be identified in their medium term plans. Aims and purposes of PE a Developing skills in physical activity; making and applying decisions; developing physical and mental capacity; evaluating and improving; making informed choices about healthy, active lifestyles. Ongoing Skills PE develops pupils’ competence and confidence to take part in a range of physical activities that become a central part of their lives, both in and out of school. A high-quality PE curriculum enables all pupils to enjoy and succeed in many kinds of physical activity. They develop a wide range of skills and the ability to use tactics, strategies and compositional ideas to perform successfully. When they are performing, they think about what they are doing, analyse the situation and make decisions. They also reflect on their own and others’ performances and find ways to improve them. As a result, they develop the confidence to take part in different physical activities and learn about the value of healthy, active lifestyles. Discovering what they like to do, what their aptitudes are at school, and how and where to get involved in physical activity helps them make informed choices about lifelong physical activity. PE helps pupils develop personally and socially. They work as individuals, in groups and in teams, developing concepts of fairness and of personal and social responsibility. They take on different roles and responsibilities, including leadership, coaching and officiating. Through the range of experiences that PE offers, they learn how to be effective in competitive, creative and challenging situations.
