Welcome to FIRST GRADE Curriculum Night!

ATTENDANCE The school day is from 7:50-3:00. (Monday – Wednesday) and 7:50 – 2:45 (Thursday & Friday) The earliest students may be dropped off is 7:15. First Graders arriving early to school will go to the gym until 7:40 when teachers pick students up. At 7:50 students are considered tardy. A written note must be sent to school upon a student’s return to school.

*Please send a note with your child if they are going home any way that is different from their normal routine. *Without a note stating changes, we must send the child home the normal way. *The office must be notified by 2:00 if there are changes in the way your child will be going home. The office will notify the teachers. *Because your child’s safety is out #1 priority, students will not be released at dismissal without a BLUE card.

Things In My Backpack: *First Grade “Eagle” Folder with: behavior log (initial nightly) reading log (write title and initial nightly) reading books on their level (coming soon) breakfast & lunch menu sight words (go over nightly) newsletter S.O.A.R. Positive Behavior Support plan homework (will start the 2 nd six weeks) Make sure that you are reading and practicing sight words nightly.

Work and Study Habits Personal Behavior – follow our S.O.A.R. PBS Clip Chart System: Green – Good Day! Yellow – Slow Down! Orange – Teacher’s Choice Red – Parent Contact

Assessments: We will be assessing the students throughout the year. At the end of each six weeks we have reading level goals. First Six Weeks: Level D (6) Second Six Weeks: Level E (8) Third Six Weeks: Level F(10) Fourth Six Weeks: Level G (12) Fifth Six Weeks: Level H (14) Sixth Six Weeks: Level I (16) *We will be assessing beginning, middle, and end of the year with D.R.A. and the Star Early Literacy. *Math will have End of Unit Assessments.

Our report cards will be “Progress Based”. They will no longer be number grades. They will focus on the TEKS (state standards). Students will receive a “D” for Developed or an “SD” for Still Developing. Many of the standards are not mastered until later in the year, so it is not uncommon to receive an “SD”. If we have a concern, we will call a conference.

I can statements are the TEKS (state standards). The students are introduced to them each time that we introduce something new. These “I Can” statements correlate with our Standards Based Report card. The “I Can” statements use the same vocabulary and are higher level.

Tips for Reading Predicting Look for important information. Look through the pictures. Think about what you already know. Think about what you will learn. Think about what will happen next.

Reading Strategies to get Tough on Tricky Words Look at the picture clues Look for a part you know in the word (if you know at, you can read cat) Reread the sentence and think about what would make sense Skip, read on and come back (context clues) Stretch through the words

Tips for Reading Summarizing Retell the story. Tell about the story parts (characters, setting, beginning, middle, & end). Think about the main idea and details.

Tips for Reading Evaluating How do you feel about what was read? Do you agree or disagree? Does it remind you of a time in your own life? Is there anything that you read that you still have a question about?

Tips for Reading Monitoring Have child point to the words as they read. Ask questions… “Does this make sense?” “Does it look right?” Try “fix ups”… reread, read ahead, or ask for help.

We save treats until the end of the day, usually around 2:30. *Healthy snack – no wet snacks *Water bottle with sport lid. *We will be starting whole class snacks instead of individual snacks. Lunch & Breakfast: *You are welcome to eat lunch with your child. *You may bring lunch to your child. *Lunch is 11:15 – 11:45! *There is no longer a “breakfast to go”. *Breakfast is 7:15 – 7:40!
