NORTH POWERED AIR-PURIFYING RESPITATOR (PAPR) INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE Preventive Medicine Industrial Hygiene Service

Ensure you have all the items for your kit. All of the pieces you see in the pictures make up one full PAPR Unit. Charger Flow meter BlowerBatteryConnection hose Tyvek sleeve for hose Filters Set of 3 Helmet and head/face shield assembly Back pad w/ nylon belt North Primair® North Compact Air®

Helmet and face-shield assembly

Unsnap head/face shield from all four locations and slip the shield off the connector at the back of helmet, to separate both pieces.

Once you have taken the face shield off the helmet, check the size indicator (S, M, L) to ensure you have the correct size that you need. How do you know? While wearing the helmet/shield assembly, the elastic band under the face shield should fit snug (not tight) under and at least 1 inch back from your chin. Size Indicator

Check helmet for damage and then make adjustments to size it properly for your head as needed. Sizing wings – allows you to size helmet to what you require; ensure both are placed on the same sizing hole. By pressing on the wings you can narrow or expand the helmet sides for a better fit Adjustment knob allows collapse or expansion of the back towards the front or vice versa

Once you have inspected all the pieces for damage and have sized it correctly for your head, put the helmet and head/face shield back together.

Remove protective caps from both sides of all three filter cartridges and screw on to the blower (you don’t need to forcefully tighten them). All three cartridges must be in place in order to meet NIOSH testing specifications.

Connect hose to blower connector as indicated above and give a light tug to ensure it is seated and secure in place. Arrow indicator found on opposite sides of connector. Will slide in to small cuts in blower connector Large locking tabs will enter into large cuts in blower connector

Connect the power cord from the blower to the battery. Align the four prong connector to the four inlets on battery, and lock the connection by turning the locking sleeve, on the cord, clockwise until secure. Lightly tug on cord to ensure it is locked in place. Observe the four prongs and the raised bump on the edge Observe the four inlets where the prongs and bump of the connect will slip into Observe the locking sleeve, it slides up and down freely

Conduct a flow check to ensure that your filter cartridges, blower and battery are working properly. Take the flow meter and place it at the open end of the hose. Push the on/off button on the battery and observe the flow ball in the meter to ensure that the required flow for the PAPR - (6 CFM) is being met.

Connect the hose end to the helmet connector. Align the bumps on the hose connector locking sleeve with the cutout spaces on the helmet connector. Observe raised bumps on opposite side of the connector Observe cutout spaces on opposite sides of the connector at the helmet

Once the hose is inserted rotate locking sleeve clockwise to secure connection. Ensure the raised block on the lip of the locking sleeve is in the groove on the helmet connector (Picture on right), this will prevent the locking sleeve from rotating out accidentally and the hose from coming off. Locking sleeveEnsure this connection is made

Place back belt with all the components at the small of your back and secure it in place at the front by locking in the belt clips

Turn the blower on by pressing the on/off button on the battery and place helmet on your head. Head band should be no more than an inch above your eyebrow line. Secure the helmet to your head using the adjusting knob at the back of the helmet. Bring down the face shield and slip the elastic band under your chin to secure in place. The elastic band should be snug enough under your chin to prevent it from slipping off, but should not be so tight that it is uncomfortable to wear. Finally, ensure the air flow is going down your face.

You are now ready to enter the contaminated area. If you notice a change in conditions, such as the wind curtain flowing down your face slows down or stops, you must exit the contaminated area ASAP. Ensure you have a fully charged battery at the start so that you can have at least 8 hours of power available. Follow the change out schedule set by your section or department for the filter cartridges, and replace cartridges as required.

After each use, separate the pieces for cleaning and storage. To separate the helmet from the hose, move the lip on the locking sleeve away from helmet to remove the raised block out of the groove. Rotate sleeve counter- clockwise to unlock. Then separate both pieces by pulling apart. Pull the hose from the helmet connector Move the lip on the locking sleeve away from helmet to remove the raised block out of the groove and rotate sleeve counter clockwise to unlock connection

To disconnect the hose from the blower, push on the figures on the blower connector (at the same time) to release security tabs, and pull both pieces apart. Push on both figures on the connector, at the same time, to release the security tabs Security tabs

Ensure you sanitize all pieces after use and as needed for Infection Control. North® Refresher Wipe Pads North® germicidal solution

Recap filters for storage.

Place battery on charger, to recharge back to full strength. Batteries should not build a memory, even if you use the PAPR unit for just a few minutes, place it back on the charger to bring it up to full charge.
