3. 1. Open the top cover lid and remove the 2 screws. 2. Close the top cover lid and lift the handle up. Remove the screw that is under the left hand side of the handle arm. 3. Lift the entire cover upward and press in on the handle arm to release the cover and the handle. Top Cover Removal 1

4. 1. Loosen (do not remove) the screw at the top of the belt cover. 2. Place the machine on its back and remove the 2 screws. 2 Belt Cover Removal

5. 3. Stand the machine upright and remove the white access cap from the belt cover beneath the hand wheel. 3 4. Remove the screw.

6. 4 5. Open the USB port cover. 6. Pull out the back edge of the belt cover and remove it.

7. 5 1. Remove the 4 screws that are in the holes. Base Unit Removal 2. Carefully pull the base away from the machine and gently disconnect the 2 wires and place the base to the side.

8. 6 Bed Cover Removal 1. Remove the 2 screws. 2. Unplug the wire from the bed cover to the wire coming from the machine, and place the bed cover to the side.

9. 7 Inspection 1. Remove the needle plate, A foot and the bobbin case. 2. After checking other locations for binds, look at the upper shaft where it enters the right bushing, between the bushing and the upper shaft shielding plate. Observe if there is any dark material or black substance on the shaft or right side bushing. This would indicate that the shaft and bushing need to be replaced. Look here

10. 8 3. Loosen the collar screw on the left end of the upper shaft. Try to move the shaft left to right. If the shaft does not move, this also indicates that the shaft and bushing should be replaced. Shaft Removal 1. To begin the shaft removal, position the shaft so that the screw in the left collar and the shield plate screw are facing upward. Remove the two screws and the black plate from under the shield plate screw.

11. 9 2. Remove the screw and the bobbin winder unit, and lay the bobbin winder on top of the stepping motor. 3. Remove the 2 screws that hold the threader motor to the front of the machine, and gently lay it to the rear of the machine.

12. 10 4. Locate the pin on the counterweight and use a 3mm hex driver to hit it out. Make sure to line the driver up good with the counterweight pin and hit it out with as few hits as possible, make sure to recover the pin. 5. Take the motor belt off and keep it to the side.

13. 6. Using a 2.5 hex driver, very carefully line it up on the pin that goes through the upper shaft timing gear. Carefully hit the pin out so the upper shaft timing gear is now loose on the shaft. Do not lose the pin. 11 7. Loosen the idler unit. 8. Slide the timing belt off of the upper shaft timing gear.

14. 9. Rotate the handwheel to bring the take up lever to its highest point. Carefully position a Philips head screwdriver or a punch through the needle bar area, so that it lines up in the center of the shaft that is sticking through the counterweight. Hit the shaft out about 2 inches. 12 10. Gently rotate the shaft outward being careful to collect the collar and shield plate. Do not forget the washer that is on the left side of the collar. 11. Use a small punch or screwdriver to tap out the right side bushing towards the inside of the machine. You must use a small enough tool that the base of the tool will pass through the casting and not damage the casting or machine.

15. 12. Clean the whole area by the bushing. 13 13. Gently line up the bushing with the casting hole and gently tap it in being careful not to damage the casting. 14. Make sure that the bushing is flush with the outside casting. Flush with casting

16. 15. Remove the hand wheel cap by pulling it straight off. 14 16. Loosen the two 2mm screws that are on the balance wheel base and twist the base off. Remove the white washer that is behind the balance wheel base. 17. Remove the belt wheel by rotating it clockwise while pulling it out.

17. 18. Remove the clutch spring from either the end of the shaft, or the belt wheel by rotating it clockwise while pulling it out. 15 19. Now slide the black timing gear and the white declutch off of the shaft. 20. Take the 2.5 hex driver and loosen the two 2.5 mm screws on the declutch ring.

18. 21. Place the shaft in a vise with the collar on the top and the majority of the shaft hanging down. 16 22. Hit the shaft down with the hammer until it becomes flush with the declutch ring and then use a screwdriver or a punch and hit the shaft the rest of the way out so the collar becomes free from the shaft. Clean all the parts really well making sure that there is no black or flaky material left on any of the parts. It is very important to do this so it will not spread onto the new shaft and surrounding area.

19. Upper Shaft Installation 17 1. Take the new shaft and place it on the vise. Take the 3mm hex driver and hit the counterweight pin out. Pull the shaft out. 2. Take the black upper shaft timing gear and line it up on the shaft with the side that has the two grooved paths on it. Line the hole that is in the timing gear with the hole that is in the shaft closest to the end. The other hole is for the upper shaft shield plate. The gear part of the timing gear will be towards the right side of the bushing. 3. Take the pin that was hit out of the timing gear before and line it up and tap it in gently so that the timing gear is held securely on the upper shaft.

20. 18 4. Place the white washer, declutch and the clutch ring on the new shaft to the right of the timing gear. 5. Hold the clutch ring with a 2.5 hex driver and position it so that the declutch moves only 0.5 mm to the left and right. It should spin around freely on the shaft but not be so loose that it wobbles. 0.5 mm 6. Tighten the two 2.5 mm screws.

21. 7. Install the clutch spring inside the declutch ring. 19 8. Position the tab on the spring inside the notch on the declutch ring. 9. Install the belt wheel, rotating it clockwise until it is all the way in.

22. 10. Install the washer, then the balance wheel base and tighten the two 2mm screws. 20 11. Replace the hand wheel, being sure that the hand wheel base notches are facing outward and that the hand wheel fits on nicely.

23. 21 12. Insert the left end of the shaft through the timing belt and into the left side bushing. 13. Slide the upper shaft through the shielding plate, collar and washer and into the counterweight. Remember that the single blade on the shield plate is on the right side facing towards the hand wheel area. 14. Move the declutch lever towards the front of the machine to prevent it from hitting against the declutch ring as you slide the shaft in.

24. 22 15. When the shaft is all the way into the counterweight turn the shaft to line up the hole in the counterweight with the hole in the shaft. Make sure that the holes are lined up perfectly. 16. Take the pin that was punched out earlier, either from the machine or from the new shaft and slide the pin onto the 1.5 hex driver. 17. Gently place the hex driver onto the top of the counterweight with the pin resting in the aligned holes and hit the driver with the hammer until the pin goes all the way down flush with the counterweight.

25. 18. Turn the shaft so the take up lever is in the lowest position. Move the upper shaft to the right, slide the collar to the left and insert and tighten the collar screw. 23 Shield plate Push against the counterweight 19.With the take up lever in the lowest point, position the shield plate with the single blade on the right facing upward exposing the opening and the hole in the upper shaft. Place the black plate and screw into the opening and move the shield plate until both blades are going to go through the sensor nicely without hitting or rubbing the sides. 20. Place the threader motor into position with the white threader guide between the two parts of the black threader carriage.

26. 21. Install and tighten the 2 screws. 24 22. Turn the lower shaft and watch the feed dogs move up and down. When the feed dogs go to the lowest spot with the tip of the hook race under the feed dogs, stop. Hook and Feed Timing

27. 23. Take the needle bar and move it to the left most position. Lower the hand wheel so it goes all the way down. As the needle starts to come back up, gently move the tip of the hook race so it is on the right side of the needle, about 1.6 to 2.mm above the eye of the needle. 25 24. At this point hold the hook race with your left hand to prevent it from moving. With your right hand slide the timing belt onto the upper shaft timing gear. Remove your hand from the hook race while still keeping your right hand on the belt against the timing gear and turn the hand wheel so the belt gets fed all the way onto the gear.

28. 25. Tighten the idler unit against the timing belt. Their should be about 7mm deflection. 26 26. Check the timing to see if the tip of the hook race is on the right side of the needle about 1.6 to 2mm above the eye. If an adjustment is needed lay the machine on its back and locate the lower shaft timing gear. Loosen the two 2.5 mm screws and put the hook and needle near timing position. Hold the hook race and turn the hand wheel to bring the needle into position so that the tip of the hook is about 1.6 to 2mm above the eye. Tighten one screw and check to see if the timing did not slip, then tighten the other screw.

29. 27. Stand the machine back up and reinstall the bobbin winder with the screw. Make sure that the end of the spring fits in the casting hole as shown. 27 Oiling

33. Bed Cover Installation 1. Reattach the bed cover by connecting the wires and placing the wires into the slotted space on the bed cover. 31 2. Make sure that the switch is over the arrow that is printed on the bed cover. 3. Place the bed cover to the machine and tighten the 2 screws.

34. Base Unit Installation 1. Reattach the base making sure that the two wires go into the color coded plug outlets and run the wires into the machine so that when the base is placed to the machine the wires do not get pinched. 32 2. Insert the 4 screws and tighten slightly. 3. Take the accessory box and place in onto the machine. Lift up slightly on the free arm to take away the free space that is between the accessory box and the free arm and tighten the 4 screws on the base.

35. Needle Swing Adjustment 1. Stand the machine up and place the motor belt back on. Place the bobbin case, needle plate and the A foot back onto the machine. Plug in the power cord and turn the machine on. 33 2. Select the zig zag stitch. Turn the hand wheel until the needle starts switching from left to right. The needle should be about 7.8 to 8.2 mm above the surface of the needle plate when it swings. 8 mm

36. 3. To make the adjustment, loosen the screw on the upper shaft shield plate. 34 4. Rotate the shield plate in the direction of A if the needle swings at a point where the needle is higher then 8.2 above the needle plate, and in the direction of B if it swings lower then 7.8mm above the needle plate. ***Turn the machine off and disconnect the power cord.***

37. Belt Cover Installation 1. Reinstall the belt cover by inserting the front edge behind the front panel and pushing in the back edge, making sure not to damage the software ports. 35 2. Install the screw and place the white access cap back on.

38. 3. Place the machine on its back and reinstall the 2 screws. 4. Push in against the back cover of the belt cover to make sure there are no gaps and tighten the screw at the top. 36

39. 1. Reinstall the top cover and handle together. Reconnect the handle arms first then push down on the top cover unit. 37 Top Cover Installation 2. Raise the top cover lid and insert the two screws and tighten. 3. Reinstall the screw under the left arm of the handle.
