Tempest Blower SECTION: Tools and Equipment ISSUED: 02-2011REVISED: ##-####

Objectives To provide an understanding of the following –Specifications –Use –Maintenance –Safety

Specifications Model BD 21-H-6.5 93lbs Belt Driven 21” Blades 3,125 RPM 17,743 CFM Honda 6.5 horse power –Single Cylinder 4 Stroke –Gasoline –10w-30 Oil –Forced Air Cooling

Features Turbo 2000 Shroud –Increases velocity by up to 30%, helps maintain the “air cone” Tilt Mechanism –Five position/ foot operated Flip Up/ Fold Down Handle –Allows for easier transport Vibration Dampers –Reduces blower from “walking” due to vibration Front Kick Steps –Allows operator to tilt blower forward, onto it’s wheels with one foot 9” Pneumatic Wheels

Exhaust Diverter Tubing Reduces the potential of re-circulating the exhaust gases produced by the blower Attaches to the exhaust tip and tightened with butterfly screws

Use Positive Pressure Ventilation –Method of ventilating a structure by mechanically blowing fresh air into the space in sufficient volume to create a positive pressure within the structure, thereby forcing the contaminated atmosphere out the exit opening Negative Pressure Ventilation –Accomplished by placing a blower at an exit opening, facing out, and using it to create a negative pressure within the structure by pulling heat, smoke and toxic gases out from the structure

Starting Procedure Ensure the ignition switch is in the “On” position Ensure the choke is closed Ensure throttle is in the slow position Turn the fuel valve to the “On” position Grasp the starter recoil handle, take up the slack and pull briskly until the blower starts Adjust the choke so the engine runs smoothly Set the throttle to the desired RPM’s To turn the blower off move the ignition switch to the off position

Set Up Procedure Flip the handle up and secure it in place Use the front kick step to tilt the blower towards you onto it’s wheels Position the blower in the desired location –Flat, hard and free of debris –Attempt to use the prevailing wind to your advantage –PPV- Approx. 6’ back from opening facing in Start the blower Once started use the “tilt step” to adjust the angle of the blower so that the air cone completely covers the opening Two blowers may be utilized to increase volume of air being blown into the structure –In series, side by side, or “V” method

Maintenance Run and clean blower once a week Ensure blower is in normal operating condition –Check for any damage paying attention to fan blades and shroud –Check proper belt tension and feel for adequate tire pressure –Ensure air cleaner is in good condition Clean Foam Element with warm soapy water, rinse, dry, soak in engine oil and squeeze out excess oil Clean Paper Element by tapping against a hard surface to remove excess dirt or blow compressed air through the filter from the inside out –Ensure all fluids are full Fill fuel to an inch bellow the fill cap Change oil filter every 50hrs –10w-30 Spark Plug –Change yearly or every 100hrs

Maintenance Ensure blower is in a “ready run” position anytime the blower is not operating –On position –Fully choked –Fuel on –Low idle

Safety Wear appropriate PPE –Minimum of helmet, gloves, and eye protection Do not operate in an enclosed, confined area Do not move the blower while it is in operation Ensure loose debris is removed form air stream prior to starting the blower Wait for the engine to cool before refueling or storing Be aware that the engine may start by turning the blade –Remove the spark plug wire when working on the blade to prevent this from happening
